Thanks, usasma, but that's a little light in the pants. Well, maybe not! I almost missed clicking on the "Create Media" button. I saved it to my Windows 10 folder, and will check it out a little more thoroughly later.

You both must have missed my post # 139 in https://www.tenforums.com/showthread.php?p=165954 which pointed you to an EightForums tutorial that instructs you to:
Download Windows 8.1 Update ISO File with "Windows Installation Media Creation Tool"


A bug with the tool was reported on an Italian Forum and confirmed by Brink in the tutorial.

Any adjacent folder (the folder and the tool are in the same location) named 'Document' (singular) gets permanently deleted when the tool completes.

Other than that, it's a great tool!

I want to say a heartfelt Thank You! everyone who tried to help me with the problem of my HP dv7-1245dx laptop requiring two tries for booting.

As of the night of December 30, 2014, she expired without complaint. I had left her on over night (which I don't normally do) and she seemingly got some updates. On Wednesday morning, there was nothing on the screen and when I attempted to reboot, I got the sound of the fan starting, a couple of hard drive sounds and then silence. Both the NumLock and CapsLock key indicators were slowly flashing.

Yesterday I took her to the friendly computer guy up the road and his diagnosis was that the video card processor is gone. Since it's on the motherboard, there's no fixing it except for soldering something or other inside, but no guarantees. He said it wasn't worth it. Otherwise, replacing the motherboard may work, if we could find one.

So, thank you, Slartybart (Bill), gregrocker, Saltgrass, topgundcp, DavidE, usasma (John), labeeman, Winuser and Layback Bear for all of your suggestions and helpful hints.

Now I need to find a new 17" laptop . . . that 15.6" laptop just isn't adequate for testing Windows 10.

I was wondering what happened with your project.

This was the last thing for me to correct on win 10 TP, and I use a HP DV7-1240us.

I'm sorry to hear that your HP laptop died, my condolences.

However, believe it or not, while I thought it was also uefi related and not having the options in the BIOS to disable secure boot and all, I discovered the issue while searching around, at least for my model.

The issue is from Fast Startup being enabled, and had affected HP laptops since Windows 8 (which I never ran).

Once disabled from control panel, power options, power buttons and selecting to change unavailable options to kill it, I shut down win 10, and on the first power up it boots instead of locking on the windows symbol with the circular progress cursor!

It is likely that one of the drivers for our older laptops is not compatible with fast startup, which relies on loading drivers in their last state, etc.

Just in case someone else like me is still trying to solve the boot twice issue coming onto 10, or even still having it on 8 ...

You're certainly welcome, though I have been a member for a bit, I used RW-1, but cant find that logon (and for brevity decided to just register the longer version, or someone else actually has my typical spelling of my moniker already on the board).

I only found that solution last night after a week of scouring the web, and your thread had a lot of useful things to try, funny how it can end up being something entirely different than what we think it is.

Appreciate the invite, not sure what I'll be doing the 29th, I wear three hats, rotorcraft CFII, IT professional, and Drone instructor, one always wins out (I have no weekends anymore lately either...) I think I'm going to be knee deep in Ethernet cabling which simply blows compared to the other two options hehehe.
