Before doing a partition resize it is very important to have an image backup or some other means of restoring your OS and files. These procedures usually have no issues but sometimes things go wrong - with potentially disastrous consequences. Installing Windows 10 to a virtual machine is much safer.

Yes back up everything you can to some where other than the drive it's on now,
It's better on a separate hard drive but that's not an option

The Operating system 7 or 8 it's self and programs... can always be re-installed "If" you have that on Disk !

Virtual machine would be better because you have plenty of ram which is showing 8 gigs :)

I'll back out of the thread and let other members advise jamos316.

If jamos316 doesn't have an external disk and won't or can't get one ... there's only one choice left. Make room on the current disk and create a backup in that space.

    Mike,

Dual booting is fine - it gives Win 10 access to physical devices. With a VM, you get virtual devices which don't work as well as the real thing.

I will stay subscribed and help out if jamos gets stuck, but I think it gets confusing if too many members post.

I think jamos needs to understand why he is installing Win10 - it's fairly stable, but that might not always be the case.
LMiller posted an excellent link on "Before you ..."

If jamos accepts the risks (Win10 Preview code, Backups on the same drive, etc) and figures out how he wants to install Win10 - then I think the process will go much smoother.

The ball falls back to jamos' court.
    Why are you installing Win10
How you want to install Win10
Dual boot, VM, Virtual Drive (this one I'd need to research)
Where do you want to install Win10
Where do you want to back up your system(s) and data
How proficient with computers are you - Schultz (I know nothing), average, experienced.

    Anyway, I'm on the sidelines.

I can't blame him I use it too but without a reliable back up :/

Kari created an excellent Hyper-V (Windows Server VM technology available natively in Win8) tutorial as alternate to VMware player

I don't have preferences I try a lot of things and offer my experience
    I installed Win10 as a Hyper-V machine - just to learn Hyper-V
