Finaly got in. Immediately began an auto update so I let that run and all seems to be ok.
Very many thanks to all who offered help. I was completely stuck without your input.

Thanks again. I got in by turning off and on a few times making sure I turned back on before fully open. After a few times I left it to open fully and it went straight into auto update.
I am wondering if the problem was caused by turning off during a previous update ?
KB3081444 may have been superceded by a newer less crappy update.
Everyone I spoke to that allowed that update to go in, who possibly had NVidia cards, had this same issue. You are lucky you got in and it resolved. Check your Update History, if KB3081444 is there, remove it. Also avoid KB3081455, that's another bad one. Well for me it was, it could be OK. KB3081455 definitely causes WinAero to crash, if you have that installed. Causes the Aerohost.exe task to fail to run. So I definitely would not use that update either.
You might have newer hardware than mine, plus I had updated my Drivers right before that - The update went in fine on this machine, but on my other Windows 8 machine with a slightly better card, the driver failed to install, so I had to find the older driver and reinstall that. It was the first time a Geforce update failed for me.
