Can't Shut Down Windows - PowerStateMonitorWindow

    Hi,

I'm fairly stumped with this one, as I can't find much on Google.

Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro, the computer won't gracefully shut down. It gives me a full screen "Shutting down..." animation, but tells me "PowerStateMonitorWindow - this app is preventing shut down" and just hangs there forever.

I can get the computer to shut down if I keep clicking the "shut down anyway" button, so it's not a major panic.

I can't find any info on what this PowerStateMonitorWindow is - can anyone shed any light?

    Thanks very much!

Someone suggested changing your power options to a 'high performance' or 'balanced' default setting and trying a restart to see if it fixes it. I'll keep researching for you and let you know if I find anything.

Another thing to try... make sure you have the Win 10 drivers from your computer/motherboard manufacturer and GPU manufacturer (if you have a graphics card installed) all updated.

Thanks very much for checking that out for me!

Sadly, the power mode doesn't seem to have an effect, although I'll keep digging in these settings.

Also, it seems Asus haven't released any Windows 10 specific drivers for my board yet, so I'm still stuck with the Windows 8.1 ones. Hopefully they haven't just ditched it given it's a few years old now.

    Thanks again!

The lack of those specific drivers is potentially a huge contributor to the problem(s) you are experiencing. I haven't found any other solutions relevant to your problem.

I'm using a 10-year old Asus M2N, I get occasional "this app is preventing, etc" but eventually it closes and it shuts down. It was a fresh install so Windows downloaded what drivers it wanted, and they all went in. You may want to try removing some drivers and see if WIndows re-installs them, if you are using Old 8.1 Asus drivers if could be a problem. Isn't there any way to refresh all MB drivers? Right click on the motherboard in Device Man, and choose "update driver? Might have to remove it, if it won't update. Then reboot and the system should find the right drivers. You will have to make sure you don't have the drivers backed up on the system else the same ones will go back in.
