    CTRL-C no longer works

CTRL-C, the sequence that enables you to copy selected text to the buffer so that it can be pasted, has stopped working for me.

It's never given me a minute of trouble on any computer until this morning but now, it simply doesn't put anything in the buffer because nothing happens when I do CTRL-V to paste the contents of the buffer where I want it. I haven't installed anything new or changed my system in the last several days. It *is* an older laptop - Dell 5559 - but still works reasonably well.

I've been using Windows for many, many years and have never seen or heard of anything like this. I'd appreciate some advice on how to solve this problem. I'm running Windows 22H2 OS Build 19045, 4170.

Test right click copy and paste

Test the OnScreen Keyboard ctrl-c, ctrl-v
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\osk.exe

Have you used canned air to blow out any dust or crumbs from the keyboard? It's not impossible to have that issue.

If I understand your suggestion correctly, you want me to launch the OSK (On Screen Keyboard), type something with it, then use the OSK CTRL-C to copy what I've typed and then the OSK CTRL-V to paste it elsewhere.

Okay, I launched the OSK, got into Notepad, typed abc, selected it, tapped CTRL and then C, moved my cursor over a few spaces, the tapped CTRL and then V. The selected abc did *NOT* appear when I did that.

I have not tried that and it's certainly not impossible that dust or crumbs got in there. Unfortunately, I don't have any canned air. [Pause] Okay, I've found a store that sells various delivery methods for compressed air, including aerosol cans and blowers, but it's way across town. However, they also sell some that are basically a squeeze bulb and that reminds me that I already have one of those for cleaning my camera lenses for my DSLR and other similar gadgets around the house. I'll give those a try first and potentially save myself a long bus ride across town....

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I may have ruled out dust or crumbs in the keyboard as being the issue.

The right-click on this keyboard gave up quite a while ago (in the sense that it almost never works). However, this laptop supports gestures so I can do a two-fingered tap on the touchpad to get the same effect and that has always worked.

I used that technique to bring up the context menu after typing my 'abc' and selecting it, then I selected COPY. I moved over a few spaces, brought up the context menu again and chose PASTE but nothing happens. Since I didn't use the CTRL, C or V keys to do the copy/paste, doesn't that prove conclusively that the keys are not the issue?

If I have ruled out the keys as being the issue, what other possibilities exist?

    Try this...

Highlight want you want to copy, then right click it, and choose: Copy

Then try Ctrl + V to paste it in a text file.
If that works... then it could be the "C" key that's got problems, and the Ctrl key works.

If Ctrl + V doesn't paste it in a text file... then it could be the Ctrl key that has the problem.

To see if the clipboard has the problem... do this...

Highlight what you want to copy and right click it and choose: Copy
Then open a text file, and right click a blank area and choose: Paste.

If that doesn't work... then it's the clipboard that has the problem.

Try this command, from a CMD window opened as Administrator:
    Code:
    powershell "Get-Service -DisplayName 'clip*' | Restart-Service"

Then it must be the clipboard because I tried exactly what you suggested and it did not work. How do I fix the clipboard?

I had a really good feeling about this being the solution but, unfortunately, it didn't work. I tried CTRL-C and rightclick-Copy but neither worked.

Well there's always the "repair install" (In-Place upgrade).

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade <---- tutorial link

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect for Home Use
Free Backup Software for Windows | AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.
