dalchina - No, the ps1 file was not where it was suppose to be. I corrected this and the script then ran successfully. I got the message that the Windows Search Box had been reset; however, my Search function is still not working, even after I restarted my computer.

You obviously think I'm a dumbass for not knowing how to Unblock a file. I guess you are correct. I never saw the blue text Unblock hyperlink.

Since Search is still not working for you, you could try doing a repair install of Windows 10 below to fix it without losing anything.

Brink, yes the downloaded file is now on my desktop and the script ran successfully. But my Search function still doesn't work. What should I try next?

BTW, I am not sure that I properly Unblocked the ps1 file, because I never saw how to do that. When I clicked on the downloaded file, it went straight to my Notepad.

    Glad that script ran then.

Not at all - I merely pointed out the answer was available, and how to get to it.

Before trying a major repair, first create a new user account (for test purposes only) - delete it later.

Boot to that account and see if search works then. If it does, the issue is account specific.

Do you have a System Restore point available created before this occurred?

    - I don't know where to find this hyperlink to unlock the ps1 file
    - I temporarily opened a new user account but the Search function didn't work there either
    - Unfortunately, I do not have a Restore Point that was created before this problem occurred

But I do have a related question. I am assuming that my Search function is not working because I am missing the SearchApp.exe file. However, I have a second Win10 computer where the Search function is working. Would it be possible to copy the SearchApp file to an external drive and then move it to this computer? If so, where can I find the file on my second computer and where/how do I install the file on this computer? If this is not a possibility, please say so.

    Thanks for your help.

I just checked and it so happens that the SearchApp.exe file already exists on both my computers. But for some reason the Search function is just not working on this newer computer.

So I guess I am back to doing the Repair (which I really don't want to do) or using a third-party Search function.

    Click the blue Unlock

Really the simplest approach without finding some precise fix is to try the in-place upgrade repair install.

This keeps all progs and data and most settings. If you have modified system files, these will be changed back to Windows default.

    =================
As for trying to copy things experimentally between PCs that's only valid if you can be very confident in the outcome. I can't recommend that.

Note here for example that Solution 5 is not relevant because you've shown the same issue exists with a new account:

You could try running the Search and Indexing troubleshooter - I doubt it will resolve this- but why not?

dalchina, my problem with the Unblock Step 3 is that I never saw the blue Unlock box on my Win10 Home computer.

For several reasons (e.g., I run a virtual XP machine on my Win10 computer), I don't want to do a Repair at this time. So I have decided to use a 3rd party search program (e.g., Everything).

Thanks again for putting up with me. I'm 86 years old and I try to think through these issues, but I'm no longer as successful as I use to be.

I've done that myself- until I got used to the idea the blue text in tutorials is clickable (I don't think the tutorials actually say that...)

    Ok, try this..

    Win key + R

    Copy and paste this:

    C:\Windows\System32\ctfmon.exe

    and click ok
    - then try opening the search box.

(If you're using e.g. VirtualBox for your VM, I wouldn't expect an in-place upgrade repair install to affect it... but ...)

Remember you can try the troubleshooter (my previous post)

Does anything happen if you press Win key + s together?

I've decided to go with a 3rd party search program, probably 'Everything'.

I did finally manage to Unlock the ps1 file, and that was a tedious process...like you mentioned, I didn't realize that the blue text was a hyperlink. But this still didn't solve my issue.

Neither did the ctfmon or the Win key + s. And I had already tried the trouble shooter without success.

Maybe the next Win10 Update will fix my problem??

Thanks again for all your help.

Does search from file explorer's search box work properly?

Note there have been numerous threads about the search box not working properly- feel free to search tenforums for those.

Try changing the taskbar Search options. (Rt click taskbar, Search).

I've never had problems with it.

I hardly ever use the taskbar search box - my start menu (Open Shell, free) has its own configurable search box.
