    Import Pictures

I connected (USB) my Canon S110 camera to the computer, then went to This PC and right clicked on camera. I selected Import Pictures, selected the pictures and specified a target folder. The selected pictures were downloaded and went into my folder. I repeated this to try to get another set of pictures from the camera. But immediately I get an error message that Import Pictures is already running and that I must close it before I can run it a second time. But I don't see it running.

I went to task manager which seems to show it running somewhere:
Windows Host Process (Rundll32) --> Import Pictures and Videos
But when I select close it just closes the second instance that displays the error message. So I can't find where it thinks the first instance is still running, nor can I close it. So I can't run Import Pictures again.

Now I see that Import Pictures apparently never ended/closed, even after the pictures from the first (only) import were transferred. The Import Pictures window is still open. I have to cancel it to end it but apparently even after pressing "cancel" somehow/somewhere it's still running.

The only way I was able to get a second set imported was to shutdown the computer and then re-start it. I can hardly do this for each set I want to upload.

Until now I used the Canon software (CameraWindowLauncher) on Win 7 computer to upload pictures but it won't run on Win 10.

Hi, suggest you find out whether the Canon software you're using is claimed to be compatible with Win 10.

If it's an old program, you might have more success by installing/running it in compatibility mode.
Check if there's an updated version compatible with your camera.

    Digital Camera Software 2.0 [Windows]
    File version: 2.0
    Release date: 25 November 2014
    - compatible with Win 7 and Win 8 64 bits - so a good chance compatibility mode will work
PowerShot S110 - Support - Download drivers, software and manuals - Canon UK

If your camera has wi-fi - try that instead.
Else transfer using the SD card - a media card adapter for USB is very cheap.

If you can't run the software any other way, then create a Win 7 virtual machine e.g. using Virtualbox (free), and install it on that.

Have you looked in file explorer. Often a camera appears as a usb drive when connected via usb.

Thank you dalchina and cereberus. The Canon software does not claim support for anything beyond Win 7. I tried running it in compatibility. It runs up to a point and then just stops, never going any further. I'll try downloading the UK Win 8 software and see if that will run.

Regarding the SD card, I can't find instructions in the S110 Powershot manual on how to copy the pictures to the card. Or for that matter how to do anything at all with the card. I've checked both my hard copy manual and the PDF version.

I am not familiar with Virtualbox (is that similar to VMWare?) and will have to look into it.

Regarding file explorer that is exactly what I used and what gives the Import Pictures option that I tried. As I wrote, it transfers the pictures properly but never closes, which is why I can't run it for a second set of pictures..

Check your Reliability History to see if there's an error report.

Virtualbox is free - install it, create a VM, install an O/S, install extensions (to communicate with hardware etc) and install your program.

This applies to many Canon cameras including yours:

That Canon link's instructions are exactly what I did. While it transfers the set (folder) of pictures I specify, it never ends. The pictures are indeed transferred to the my computer folder. But because the Import Pictures never ends/closes, Windows won't let me run it again to import another set. The failure to close/end is the problem. See screenshots.
Even if I select Cancel it only cancels the second instance, not the first one.

I have a Canon EOS 60D and a Canon PowerShot, both use the SDHC Card for data storage. I just pull the card out and plug it into a computer with the SDHC slot and use file management to copy or move the image files to the Pictures folder. A caveat: older computers with an SD card slot or portable/USB SD card readers can't read the newer SDHC cards. SD cards can be up to 2GB capacity while SDHC can be up to 4GB and larger. An SDHC reader can work with both types.

Normally pictures are directly stored onto the SD card in a DCIM folder.
Do you have a card reader in your PC? Then it may read the card directly. Or is the SD card in the camera showing up in File Explorer? And is the DCIM folder present?

FWIW I remove the SD card from my cameras, plug it into a USB card reader, view the photo picture icons then copy across the selected photos to a folder of my choice. This is much faster than fiddling about with bespoke software which often doesn't work properly.

Thank you Steve C, PiKo and Berton. I "discovered" that the pictures are stored only on the card. Following your post, I right-clicked on the camera in file explorer and found all the pictures' folders available in DCIM. I picked the folder date I wanted and simply copied the pictures into my folder on my computer. Didn't even have to move the card to a card reader. Problem solved. And I don't need Import Pictures function which never ends.

    Thank you everyone!
