Can't move or delete some files in folder

I have a folder with 8,000 EML files. I'm trying to move these files to a different folder on the same HD. I couldn't move them all at once, so I tried selecting some files and moving them,. It works ok for some files, but I've identified 2 files as being unmovable and undeletable. I assume when I try to move a group of 200-900 files and it doesn't work, I assume a corrupt file in the selection.

I did run Scan Disk and Defrag with no effect. I tried copying to a new folder - no effect. I have a feeling some files are corrupt. How do I fix these? or is there some other issue or fix?

Do you get a particular message? If so, what is it?

    2. Are these files readable? (Double clicking one should open it in your default email client)

    3. You can check if the file is locked by something quite readily with various free 3rd party tools.

    4. Check your disk (e.g. Crystal Diskinfo (free).
    If ok, run
    chkdsk x: /scan
from an admin command prompt - changing X to the relevant drive letter. Result on screen.

No particular message, it just didn't do anything. It left the files selected. I tried multiple times. The seemingly corrupt email does open just fine. If I right click the file and choose properties - Read Only is not checked.

Crystal Diskinfo says HD is Good. Not sure what 3rd party tools I should use to see if the file is locked. Yesterday I exported a ton of EML files, which included this problem file plus all these others that are not being moved to another folder. It seems unlikely to me that a few files would be locked in this situation. I did chkdsk x: /scan with no problems found by Windows. Thanks for your suggestions

Locked file checkers (Google) - free:
UnLock IT Free - Unlock a File or Folder Locked by the System
LockHunter is a free 64/32 bit tool to delete files blocked by any processes

    etc
Typically add a useful context menu option.

    - though if you get no message, maybe they indeed are not locked.

Similarly, presumably not a permissions issue- else you'd get an indicative message.

Suggest you copy (rather than move) the problem files to the new location, then return and clean up- delete the original folder by what ever means is necessary.

I installed UnlockIT and dragged the bad file and it didn't show up. I then dragged a file next to it and it showed up and said it was unblocked. I put the HD in a more powerful computer and sill have the same problem, Some file selections copy others don't - no message.

I tried also copyng the bad file instead of moving it - same thing - does nothing. I exported a lot of EML files from my Sent items and they're in about 4 different folders. 1 folder had 26,000 EML files in it and moved fine. Another one with 138 files moved fine. But 2 folders with 13,000 and 21,000 have only been partially moved, because of these un-movable files

Try this Delete method,no third party tools involved.
    Select the file/folder.
    RIGHT click on it.
Select "Properties" and then the Details tab.
At the bottom of the window, select "Remove properties and personal information"
In the new window, select the second Radio button "Remove the following properties from the file"
In the same window click on "Select all" then "OK".
In the Details tab window, click "OK "
    Seeif that works for you.
Perhaps changing the file format from "eml " to "pdf " also may be helpful.

Right click on the folder name > Properties > Security (tab) > in the section "Group or user names", scroll to the bottom Group/Name listed > Are they all ticked under "Allow"?

If not, click Edit > tick all > OK (wait will it goes through the 8000, it'll take a minute or 2)

I was able to solve this in an unusual way. I have a backup program called Vice Versa. Vice Versa was able to copy these bad folders and on my backup HD I was able to move the files the way I wanted to. I have no idea why this worked, but glad it did. It did lose a few files, maybe they were corrupted and it couldn't copy them. But considering these were about 40,000 EML files, I'm not concerned since these were in my Sent folders and most people I sent multiple emails to
