    Good. That's that one solved.
As for the overlay icon indicating the association: see this option:

See the red pdf overlay on the thumbnail to the right? That option removes and enables it.

So try setting default app for dng to snip and sketch then reboot and check thumbnails. You can always revert the setting.

I changed default to 'snip & sketch'
Still no Thumbnails .... did confirm that double clicking on a DNG file opens it in 'Snip & Sketch'

I don't have other ideas. Maybe other members might help. If you fix it post the solution.

No need to over think this. Windows will display a thumbnail preview(image) on any file provided you have the proper app\program installed. all you need in your case is raw image viewer. You can usually get one at your camera makers website or you can use a generic freebie like the one below (dng viewer). It's small (2.36mb installed) and should solve your problem. I have newer versions of photoshop and lrc but they will not open a dng directly. That is what should have. You don't have to use the viewer if you don't want to. just being installed is enough.

Download DNG Viewer | Free Dng file viewer for Windows

I have Adobe Lightroom installed, that is what I use to post process the DNG files.
It shows all the DNG files OK.

Or do I need a separate viewer (never needed previously)

Have you tried creating a new user account for test purposes and then in that comparing the behaviour of dng's?

That will tell you whether your perceived problem is something in Windows as a whole, or particular to your account, unless the problem comes from running the same program in both.

In the new user account simply use file explorer to check.

FYI: If you're going to install the suggested DNG Viewer from MS Store I'd suggest uninstalling the other MS DNG Extension v3 first.

Also test a new user account as @dalchina suggested.

Concern is it does not state DNG support
"This viewer, beside CR2, it supports also NEF, RAF and CRW file formats."

Will try & let you know how it goes .
