    Shortcut problem

Upgraded from 8.1 to 10. Now all my "shortcut icons" all have what looks like a white notebook page covering most of them. Did not have the problem before going to Win 10 If I delete the program icon and then go and create another one, same thing happens. Icon is created with a 'notebook type icon on top of original icon. Does not happen on my other system which was a complete new install of Win 10 in Parallels. This system is a plain jane Dell XPS system which had no icon problems prior to Win 10.

Hello Topster, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations for shortcuts (lnk files).

Found the answer and it cleaned up the problems with notepad type overlays on icons on shortcuts created in Win 10 Upgrade. Went to Shell Icons in reg. Data for value 29 was C:ProgramData\Empty.ico.
    Changed it to %windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50.

Saved and did a restart. All icons from programs on system that I created shortcuts for now show up nice and neat with no arrows or any overlays.

Thanks for all the help, hope this helps someone else out. :):):):):):)
