    courses for 12 yr olds

    Windows 10 Home x64 Version 21H2 Build 19044.1586

This may not be the right forum for this but can anyone recommend a simple way of
getting a 12 yr old boy interested in LEARNING about computers. My grandson is quite bright and good at maths. He uses his tablet an awful lot and I am looking lto point him in the dilrection of learning about them as he is bound to want to use one before long if only for school work.

There is a bewikdering amount of stuff available on the web but I dont feel equipoed to evaluate it. It doesnt want to be too babyish but so far as I know he knows little more than how to find videos he wants . My son works in computer technology but as a result he sorts out any problems on demand so my grandson isnt much.past switching or simple searching. He has played quite a bit with minecraft.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Hello @PostmanPuzzled,

That is a good question. As a start:

    • As he is probably in senior school, have they got any basic computer courses running. It might be worth a phone call.
    • Do you have a local library as they often run a variety of computer courses for different computer literacy levels ?
    • Some places run night school classes for a variety of computer courses for different computer literacy levels.
    • Maybe you could purchase a basic skills computer book as a start to see if he takes to it before you lay out money for courses etc ?
    • Obviously there are YouTube videos as he is already used to this sort of integration.

I hope this helps as a start.

    Marie,

    His tablet is a computer.
He probably has IT lessons at school.
He will soon be teaching you about them. Just make sure you always make a system image & check your [Macrium?] boot disk before you let him fiddle with your computer.

It's impossible to say what course of action is best.
He might find that he becomes interested in one of more aspects of computing
    - the hardware inside a computer
    - messing about inside Windows to get it to do what he wants
    - getting the best out of applications such as Excel [actually, particularly Excel because it is used by so many businesses for so many purposes] or powerful database applications
    - learning about how computers are networked together [network management is a specialism in its own right]
and all I can suggest is encouraging him in the direction he wants to go.

For kids start them on videos and walk them through it hands on. Example if watching a video on how to do something, walk them through it. Nothing like hand on training. Plus, it gives them a sense of accomplishment. Which is turn keeps them interested.

Also, if things are too complicated, they may get bored and give up. Start with the simple things and go from there. You also have a great tool at your disposal in your son. Ask him some simple learning tools / videos.

Of course, there are books, schools, and other resources, but start with the simple and see where it goes from there.

    My two cents.

Thankyou very much all of you. A lot of food for thought hear. A good idea to consult his father ! I can offer to pay for anything he thinks might encourage him. But I will try the various things suggested.

They will probably help me !

Well your son should be a mentor if he know computers, you get him to teach your grandson assuming his son to do things on the computer. Any computer dad would be teaching their kids so i don;t understand why your son is not unless you have more than one son.

I had a mentor in my family that taught me how to pull apart computers when i was like 5 i spent my teens going through what we call hard rubbish which is when certain time each year residents can leave rubbish on the nature strip and the council will come pick it up for free.
it was a gold mine of computers back then and because of that they made a rule that you can't pick stuff from the rubbish piles and then it was no electrical goods because they knew.
We still used to do it but that is also who i learned computers because i built up a stockpile of parts to learn with.

When i was in High school i got into a course for multimedia design so making games and animations on the computer.

I then got a job in my 20s doing Audio Visual for a company that does TV production and music concerts which is all by computes it never worked out but i was there for a few years and i learned some things. I was already good at computer by this point but i saw things that are on the industrial side of computers.

Buy him a computer it does not have to be a good one it can be something 10 years old or more recent like 5 years old and used even and he can learn to do things on it because its his so it does not matter if he blows it up. Gaming is big now so he will be wanting one because his peers have one and play games. Kids want to do what their friends do.

Quite a bit later: I took on board the mentor idea and asked his dad for his opinion. He said the LAPTOP his son is using was slow but he could not afford a new one. I tentatively proffered the idea of paying for an update kit. This was quite expensive but I did it. He and his father (my son said the boy did most of the actual work under his direction very well) and it worked. My grandson was over the moon about it. It is the first real enthusiasm I have seen him show for a present !

He obviously takes after his grandad who was a great fix-it man, a telephone engineer always interested in how things work so I am continuing down that road. Thanks for all your interest. We might start looking at cars next time their car goes wrong - he needs to be involved in problem solving machinery I think.

    Marking this as solved.
