Thinkpad 15 screen not turning on

My Thinkpad 15 was knocked off my lap by one of our dogs and hit the floor hard. Now when I turn it on a short,6 or 7 tones, will play but nothing after that. The screen stays black. The keyboard backlights still work but that's about it. Would buying a new screen be my first option?? Or could the motherboard been damaged?? Any ideas??

You might want to consider what those beeps mean- possibly 'BIOS' POST beeps:

Computer Beep Codes and Solutions on Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus

You can research those to ensure you have the right interpretation for your PC.

You may wish to check the disk is ok- hopefully it's a SSD.

The beeps I am getting are more of a musical sound that change in pitch. I will try and get an extra number of tones and see where that leads me. However, without the screen coming on I really can't check anything. Like I said after the beeps/tones there is only a black screen to stare at.

What those might be also depends when they occur, and of course on what's happened internally.

If you have important data on the disk and you haven't got a backup (you have, of course, haven'y you?) then consider removing the disk and seeing if you can access it using another PC.

Clearly there's no point in trying to access the BIOS/UEFI if the screen shows nothing.

After that- depends on your own expertise/decision as to whether you attempt to open up the device, take it to a repair place, or simply scrap it.

Fortunately I had a cat who was always careful never even to step on the keyboard!

Thank you for your reply. I do have a Roboform backup so I will do a restore on a different laptop and hopefully recover some files I really need. I have opened numerous laptops so I will open that one up and see what I can see. If nothing else maybe I can remove the hard drive and add it to my other laptop as an external drive. Can't do that today but will dig into it tomorrow.

Er.. well, glad your logins and passwords are secure (Roboform - password manager...). Not such good news it's a HDD, perhaps- you may be lucky.

My Roboform backups are saved to a cloud so hopefully everything I need will be available. The backups are for the whole HHD, not just my passwords and such.

I don't think you mean Roboform. The only Roboform I know of (and I use it) is a password manager.

Crap!!! Your right. I'm screwed. Oh well, not the first time I've had to buy a new laptop and start all over again.
