I've been a MS loyalist since the early 90's. The first upgrade I ever did was in dos, went from 6.0 to 6.2 and the upgrade came on one 3.5" floppy. I still have this dos box set up in its original configuration, duel floppies and a massive 420 MB hard drive, to remind me of how far we have come in home computing. I have upgraded the OS on my computers every time a new version was released. For me Windows 8 was a disaster and this is coming from someone who liked Windows ME. After the Win 8 fiasco and subsequent 8.1 I lost interest in upgrading and reverted back to Win 7 on my two main computers and left the forums for awhile. MS made a brilliant move to push Windows 10 through auto updates and give it away for free otherwise I would not have tried it. Two weeks ago I said what the hell and registered for a free copy, fast forward two weeks, I've upgraded three computers and clean installed on one of them. All I can say about Windows 10 is "Bitches I'm Back"

For now it is Windows 7, 10 and Xubuntu. I don't know which I use the most. I am still testing others distros to see if I like any others better.
groze you sound a bit like me. Although I have a "Main OS" which is Win10 now, that is totally and thoroughly setup, I get bored with using the same desktop day after day and like to slip into a different OS for change or test the alpha & beta stages...

I upgraded 3 devices to Windows 10. I tried to perform a clean install on my desktop and it wouldn't activate. I followed all the step laid out in the tutorial but never worked. I contacted MS Support, that was a mistake, all I got was someone reading a script to me. Gave me no explanation for the problem. I requested to get my case escalated to a MS engineer and they refused.

I read on the MS Community Forum that this is a known problem but got no help there.

I went back and reinstalled Win 8.1, took no updates and upgraded to Win 10. I guess that will be as close to a clean install I'll get for now.

I had a different experience. I used the phone activation screen ("slui 4") to reactivate. The automated agent could not give me the activation string and forwarded me to a first level tech, who then forwarded me to the next level. That technician remoted into my computer and did some magic. I am now activated with a new key. It looks like a retail key. My point is that Microsoft can and does indeed help solve this problem. If you encounter this again, try using phone activation to start the conversation.

I know an OS is simply supposed to provide an interface for people to get things done, but my inner nerd enjoys using an OS for its own sake.

Windows 10 is just more fun. I am glad that I made the upgrade.

Just why is it so important to have a clean install? Seems just installing Win10 over Win7&8.1 has worked really well for many including myself.
Partly it is a holdover from XP days when the installer used a file-copy installation method and left "trash" in portions of some sectors. That issue has gone away since Vista when Microsoft changed to an image-copy installation method that guarantees only intended data (even if zeros) in all sectors written to. For the rest, it does clean up the accumulation of programs and files that were never tested with Windows 10 and could affect performance in some way. It is called taking out the trash. When I clean installed on one of my veteran systems the "trash" was nearly 300 GB of "stuff." The system was a lot more nimble afterwards. So it depends on how you have been using your system whether or not a clean install is helpful. If mostly for emails, browsing, and games then you probably don't need to do it. If you have used all sorts of arcane little programs over time then you definitely should consider it, although I recommend using Reset this PC in Settings/Recovery first. It is a clean installation from within Windows and gives an option to keep your data files. If you don't like that result, you always have the clean install option open. The real hardcore folks on this issue insist on completely reformatting just to make sure. It is their comfort zone.

I used the free upgrade just the other day and so far I'm fairly comfortable with it. Didn't like it all the first day or two but I'm getting used to it as time goes by. It has some very strange quirks but perhaps future updates will correct them.

Also, finding this forum was a huge help to my piece of mind as it feels as though I've found some friends who I can ask for help from time to time and that my friends is a great big plus in the comfort department.

I used to fight these things but if we want computers, then we have to go with the flow for the most part. It's inevitable.
