Something keeps creating an unwanted folder in My Docs

Something keeps creating an unwanted folder in My Docs-snag-001.jpgWin 10 Home (21H2)

Every few days or so, some application is creating a folder in My Docs called '_UNZIP'

How can I go about determining what is creating this folder? If I delete it, it comes back. I have tried reading the folder's properties, but find no clues there.

I tried sifting through Event Viewer, but didn't find anything. (Not sure if Event Viewer even tracks folder creation)

The last time it was created was 3:07 PM, Thurs Feb 3, which was within a minute of the PC's bootup time. That's the only clue I have.

    Thanks.

    Hi @ziffel

This is strange. Before unzipping it, be sure to scan it for viruses. (virustotal in my sig). Also, this could be caused by a new program, when did it start appearing?

James, it's actually a folder, rather than a zipped file. I inserted a screenshot above to show this.

The folder is always empty. No files in it, including no system or hidden files. Some application is creating this folder. I'm sure it's benign, but am just very curious to what is doing it.

    How peculiar…

Thanks for the screenshot, and I’ll investigate your case. For now I’m off to bed. Have a good rest of your day.

Maybe FolderchangesView could help. Set it to watch that _unzip folder and you'll see which files are created and deleted...

Fair guess is that you have a third party archive program installed.

The only one I have is 7-zip, which I've used for many years, but this behavior is recent.
@AndreTen, thanks i'll take a look at FolderChangesView

With some luck you'll get the program that writes there (via file names)

My guess would be some app update.

I would scan for malware to ensure it isn’t the cause.
Malwarebytes is recommended & ensure scan fro rootkits is enabled. https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download
