I see that we approach this from different points of view. For me it's "innocent until proven guilty", it's the Tinfoil Hat Brigade who needs to present proof; Microsoft does not have to prove their innocence any more than they have already done. You seem to think that every paranoid theory is OK and does not have to be proven right, it's enough when someone voices it and then it's up to MS to prove it's not true.

Microsoft has made it very clear why they collect the data: to make Windows and my Windows experience better by providing for instance more accurate and closer to my interests search results and so on. Yes, of course they use for instance my Bing or Cortana searches to target ads but they also specifically promise me they do not collect this data from any of my personal data, my documents, emails and such:

(From Microsoft Privacy Statement, July 2015)

What they collect, how they collect it and why it's collected, all is explained.

I rephrase what I said earlier: It is paranoid, even borderline sick to believe that Microsoft records everything you say in range of your PC microphone, that they spy you and your activities. Your PC is not constantly "calling home", Microsoft does not have any interest in your personal documents, your mail messages, your Skype chats and so on.

I think that if MS spying you is a big concern to you, your only option is not to use Windows. It's just that I cannot understand how an Android, iOS or MacOSX device would be better, Apple's and Google's take in privacy is much worse.

    Lets look at that again

''Microsoft uses the data we collect to provide you the services we offer, which includes using data to improve and personalize your experiences. We also may use the data to communicate with you, for example, informing you about your account, security updates and product information. And we use data to help make the ads we show you more relevant to you. However, we do not use what you say in email, chat, video calls or voice mail, or your documents, photos or other personal files to target ads to you.''

They are not saying they do not collect and store (and maybe share) the data they are simply saying they wont use that particular data to target you with Ads, there is nothing to stop them passing on that information or using it in any other way.

It is however an admission that they do collect Data from

    e-mail
    Chat
    Video Calls
    Voice mail
    Documents
    Photo's
    other PERSONAL files

No. That is not an admission. Show me proof that they collect data from your personal documents.

It's a simple thing for then to state that they simply DO NOT collect this type of data for any use, in any form wouldn't it ?
The fact that there is so much concern over this and they have not denied it seems very odd to me, does it not to you ? the wording of the statement above really skirts the issue it does not say they do not collect that information, but rather that they will not use it to target you with ads.

lets look at it again.. and again

we do not use what you say in email, chat, video calls or voice mail, or your documents, photos or other personal files to target ads to you.''

See the emphasis change ''we do not use'' to use you first have to be in possession of.. why not ''we do not ever collect or store'' would be simpler don't you think ?

Our local dentist has for example been warned by the local authority not to use windows 10 based systems for reasons of confidentiality is very telling. I think there are real concerns out there and not just from the odd nutjob it would be so very easy for Microsoft to put everyone's mind at rest over this issue.

I have promised to myself to stay within the forum rules in these "MS is spying us" conversations, as well as to stay as polite as possible. That's why, in my efforts to try to keep the promise I have made to myself I cannot and will not say what I really think.

I wonder how important some users think they are? I am not important, I know Microsoft has not the faintest interest in checking what I wrote to my sister in an email or what I said to my friend in Skype chat. I welcome my accountant and doctor and lawyer to keep my records on a Windows 10 computer if they so decide, I know that again, MS has not the faintest interest in breaking in to their computers to retrieve that data or making their computers to call home to send that information. I know there's no alarm triggered at MS when I upload the pics about yesterday's drunken pub quiz from my Windows Phone to OneDrive, as well as I know that no alarm goes off at MS when I update my monthly budget in Excel or check my online banking statements using Edge.

I am not important. Of course they are not interested in this.

I know that Microsoft, as well as Google, Adobe, Yahoo and whatnot collect data about how, when and for what purpose I use their services. I welcome that. I like the way Cortana learns my habits, willing to serve me better, I like that Google remembers me, I like that YouTube shows me recommendations based on my viewing habits. Statistics and numbers are important to any business, as is a satisfied customer; collecting the data they need to keep me satisfied and to be able to offer me better and more relevant services and ads is important and mutually beneficiary.

BTW, saying that authorities warned your dentist not to use Windows 10 is not telling anything, and it most definitely is not a proof about MS spying.

That does not make her any more credible. Or should we, because it comes from such a great authority really take it seriously when she says that "RFID chips and other emerging technologies could lead to the Mark of the Beast"?

You forgot to mention that the quote about her educational background is from her own website. Wikipedia only mentions her Doctor of Education title, the references to any Business and International Marketing degrees can only be found on her own website and on websites closely connected to her.

All personal preferences and new features being set aside, the user surveillance capabilities are truly outrageous. I don't really understand how it could be "worth it" on a system that is used on a daily basis. Maybe... just a big maybe... on a DX12 gaming machine that stays offline the majority of the time and is only connected intermittently for online gameplay sessions, then disconnected again, with no email, web surfing or personal files stored on it... maybe. But, the mere fact of how they designed Windows 10 to operate in terms of data gathering should be enough to make everyone angry. It's not whether or not one has something to hide as much as the dishonorable intent behind the architecture. I hear all of the excuses being made, dismissing it because Google already does it, blah, blah, blah, yet I see it being different because it is the operating system. This is not a service that we can opt out of and totally disconnect from and cancel our user account for. And, since when does two wrongs ever make a right?"

"Dishonorable intent"? To collect statistical data to make the OS better in the future and to offer the user more relevant search results and content?

    Sorry for my bad English!

I think that would have been unnecessary for the most part this discussion , if Microsoft does not have all the functions activated from the outset and the users themselves decided what he would have enabled or not ! (Opt In)

Trust me, nobody cares about what we do, when we do it or where we do it. Nobody cares

And to target Ads to us how, through web pages ? web pages are the same for everyone. Through Email ? The only reason you get spam is because you hand out your email address, then it gets handed out to a few dozen advertisers, totally normal, been happening for years.

What other ads are you talking about ?

And I agree with Kari, how does someone get data from non downloaded documents or photos unless your PC is hacked, which is illegal and another topic altogether.
