Not exactly Win 10 related -but....

    Hi,
First, apologies if this is not the appropriate forum for this question......

I have a text file with a long list of Song Titles and they are in random Alphabetical order.
It is a 'pure' text file with each entry on a separate line with no formatting.
I would like to re-arrange the titles in Alphabetical order but have been unable to do so - so far.....

I've tried to use Microsoft 2003 Word (I know ! it's ancient!), Notepad, Open Office and Notepad ++ but none of them would allow me to carry out a Sort procedure....

I would be very appreciative of any suggestions as to how I could sort this list into Alphabetical order.

    Kind Regards
    (Windows 10 Pro 64bit)

You could try this online option. Sort Lines Alphabetically I just tried it and it worked for me.

    Hi Willum08,

I'm using Word from Office 365, however; I believe that the feature was included with Word 2003.

Have a look for the sort shortcut on the home tab.

If you have access to Excel, it has much more versatile sorting features although Word will perform a simple sorting function.

According to this site, the sort feature in Word 2003 is located in the Table Menu.

Sincere Thanks to all you guys... 10 Stars to all for prompt replies...
The solutions offered by Lance1 and badcrc are just what I need and work perfectly.
TextFixer is particularly relevant since it allows removal of duplicates as well :) I know there are a few in the list.....

W10 Tweaker, the facility you mention does not appear to present in Word 2003... but Thanks anyway....
The edit facility in Word 2003 seems to be for Tables only... not just a simple text list.... I did try this...

Kind Regards to all and Stay Safe......

I'm glad you found a working solution.

If you did care to use Word, the directions for sorting with Word 2003 are shown on both links I posted. It does require you to scroll down below Word 2007.

You can Sort a text column in a Word table. Unfortunately, Word does not have a Filter function

However, you can do this by inserting an Excel worksheet in Word. You can then Sort and Filter the data. Note the data is filtered for unique values.

Hey Mister Ed ! Thanks so much for your very detailed explanation - really appreciated all the work you've put into it!
I've made a copy of your post for future reference. However, I've found that TextFixer posted above by 'badcrc' gives me the simplest solution since it also includes the option to remove duplicate entries. There are some 600 or so entries in my file so having the option to automatically remove duplicates is a great bonus.......

Of course the easiest way to handle this is to user Excel 2003. You can use it to sort one or more columns of data. It also has extensive filtering options. The best thing about using Excel is that it doesn't really remove duplicates but hides them. That way you can see them again if you change your mind.

Sometimes I have a column of data in a Word table I need to sort and filter. I then copy this data into an Excel worksheet. After I get done sorting and filtering the data I copy it back to Word.
