Scheduled Task, Custom Power Profile No Longer Work

I've had a custom power profile set to put my PC in sleep mode after 4 hrs idle and a task setup in Task Scheduler to wake the PC every morning at a specified time. Both have been working flawlessly for a long time. Now, after installing update KB4592449 neither are working. The PC stays on for hours and I have to manually wake it every morning. I don't know if the update has anything to do with it, but everything was working up until then. I've checked both power profile and task and they're still set up correctly and enabled.

If it helps, this is what the task history says:

Does this mean that it stays on for the expected 4 hours then sleeps? So the only problem is the wake task.
or, as I think you are saying,

1 The computer does not sleep after 4 hours - What does it do? It must be going to sleep at some stage since you need to wake it.
2 The timed wake task has no effect.

3 What does Event viewer have to say?
3.1 You can import this Custom view definition to show sleep transitions - Power - Sleep-Hibernate transitions.zip - Unzip it then use the import control on the right-hand side of the Event viewer window.
3.2 You can look at other events at around the relevant times using Event viewer but I find NirSoft's MyEventViewer easier for such browsing. You might find that events just before & after those shown in Event viewer itself help you to understand what is failing to happen.

4 I assume wake timers are still enabled in the Power plan.

5 Is there a reason you are still using Version 1903/1909? Perhaps making a system image then updating to 2004/20H2 will resolve matters.

    Best if luck,
    Denis

    Thanks for responding.

I have to manually put the PC to sleep at the end of the day.

Yes, everything is still set properly for wake timers/sleep in the Power Plan properties.

Is there a reason you are still using Version 1903
I was completely put off by how MS destroyed folder search in 1909 and so I plan on staying with 1903 as long as possible. Also, there have been no feature updates that interest me post-1903 and something usually gets F'ed up every time I accept a feature update anyway.

I will have a look at the Event Viewer and see if I can decipher anything. I don't usually understand what I see there.

Come to think of it, avoid being led down a blind alley - reinstall your display driver [from your computer maker's support site if it came with the computer - and check for any updated Bios while you are there].

Display driver reinstallation was one of the top suggested steps for sleep problems in Windows 7.

Checking the driver is up to date in Device manager will not do. Device manager only checks against lists of version numbers & publication dates. Reinstalling the display driver would correct any corruption within it or the internal Windows registrations that it affects.
    - If the display driver was not at fault then you will have done no harm.
    - If the display driver was at fault then you would not have otherwise found any diagnostic test to tell you of the fact so reinstallation instead of investigation is the only possible course of action.

No sane people understand what they see in Event viewer.

I use it to compare successful events with unsuccessful ones in the hope that the difference points me in a useful direction.

I also resented the wrecking of File explorer search in Version 1909 [the loss of the blue syntax guidance]. I still use it for very simple searches but I use a third-party utility much more often these days.

I chose NirSoft's SearchMyFiles There are lots of others available. I like the fact that it can search file content [including MSOffice file content].
    - see, just for example, the explanation of using it for content searching in my ditty - using SearchMyFiles for contents search [post #8] - TenForums

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Ha, big NirSoft addict here.

They have the best utilities, and I like that they don't have to be installed.

Okay, both issues seem to be resolved.

I went into Task Scheduler and clicked the options "If the task fails, restart every 1 minute(s)" and "Attempt to restart up to 3 times". That seems to have fixed the problem (although those options weren't ticked before, when the task was working for months).

For the sleep mode issue, I went into the power profile, changed the idle time from 4 hrs to 1 hr, clicked SAVE, reopened and changed it back to 4 hrs.

Both have been working properly for the last 3 days so I'm gonna assume these issues are solved.
