PowerShell opens in random or wrong position

I'm not sure if this is a PowerShell or Windows 10 issue, but when I open PowerShell, it doesn't open where I last had it (snapped to the right half of the screen), it just opens wherever it wants at whatever size it wants.

I think this happens with other apps, but PowerShell is the only one right now that I snap to the right half of the screen.

The issue also happens across Windows restarts, or logins, or anything. Windows just doesn't seem to remember window positioning much unless the app was fullscreen before. None of the apps I've seen with the issue were from the Microsoft Store (the ones meant for Surface tablets). If someone knows how to fix this or figure out why it does this (not just guesses), please post the solution below, because I'm not finding it or how to figure out why it behaves this way.

Morning, tevifoda, and welcome to Tenforums. Please fill in your system specs best you can so we all know better what we're dealing with. Particularly your complete Windows versions (as found on WINVER command).

I tried your snapping of PS and other windows, and yes it will not retain last snapped position. I'm just confirming. Sometimes holding the ctrl or shift key down while right-clicking the title bar and selecting Close will work, but I haven't had much success with that lately. It used to work well.

I know, what I just said could be a "guess" which you don't want, you want only concrete fixes that work first time. It's hard to help on any problem without discussion and suggestions.

PowerShell start position is weird, it cascades then at some point restarts back up near the top. PowerShell ISE behaves like a normal window, remembering position and size...

Confirmed. Even the Snap is retained with ISE versions. ISE comes up in a Win32 Shell, whereas non-ISE does not. That is probably why.

Did you go into its properties and set the size of the window and where you want it on the screen ?

I do this with Command Prompt, I set the size of the window and where I want it on the screen. I also make the font bigger and change the color to green.

Oh, and you have to have to uncheck "let windows position the screen" etc

Hopefully these options are available for PS, as I don`t use it.

    This is the way

@AddRAM, Powershell has the same options a Command Prompt:

As you can see, I have mine set to open almost at top right of screen.

    Thanks for the info.

WINVER just shows a pop-up window that shows too much proprietary company info on it, and I can't select text in it, just make a cropped screenshot... so maybe that's not the best way to ask for Windows version info.

Going into Windows Settings and searching for "version" shows the "About" page, which seems to show everything... though I still have to chop out proprietary information like serial number or product IDs or company info.

The easiest way may be just to hit Start then type version, then hit System Information... which lets me Shift+click to select text lines to copy-paste without too much proprietary info. However, that info is missing the "20HS" "Version" number and the OS Build sub-number 630 from OS build 19042.630... so I'll combine what looks relevant below from these three sources. I don't know why Windows 10 just doesn't have an easy way to show all of the relevant info.

    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 20H2
    Installed on ‎11/‎19/‎2020
    OS build 19042.630
    Serial number ***
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
    Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042
    System Manufacturer LENOVO
    System Model 20QN001QUS
    System Type x64-based PC
    ThinkPad P53
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2592 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)
    SMBIOS Version 3.1
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB

That should be enough... maybe you can specify what of those are relevant?

Anyway, when I test opening and closing PowerShell from taskbar pin, the window will open one window title bar height down each open, even after closing. I don't understand this behavior, but it seems to be old/buggy behavior inherent to how Windows manages opening windows. I don't manually select ISE anywhere, though I notice it in the right-click menu from the taskbar.

I'll have to take a more careful check later. Thank you for offering suggestions anyway, you're correct that it may not be wise to restrict answers to concrete ones, but I was just trying to avoid a bunch of boilerplate suggestions that weren't actually related or were just spaghetti-at-the-wall guesses that would lead me down red herrings and rabbit holes that would just waste time.

Thanks for the system spec info. Asking for it is something we do with every new member. We have no idea who or what we are dealing with, and it's standard to ask. It's even on the first screen when you register. We hope members will enter more that "Windows 10" just to get by the screen.

The one-title bar down opening is normal. Windows is cascading the windows so the ones behind don't get too lost from focus. Does it to me, also.
