@kado, thank you for giving me one more chance to engage in my favorite rant vis-à-vis AviDemux. For some reason I still don't comprehend the excellent one pass mode xvid encoding was removed after version 2.4.4. But you can still download 2.4.4 here:

I've gotten away from video but it looks like AviDemux is still good to have in the toolbox. I'd recommend 2.4.4 as well as the latest and greatest.. that is if you ever encode using xvid.

If I remember correctly it was rewritten for 2.6.x to be time based rather than frame based. Perhaps Xvid got lost in the rewrite.

Thanks Keith for the heads up on Avidemux. With the copy function that makes sense. But you cannot really do a lot of editing with copy. Most functions require you chose an ouptput option.

Btw - in Machete it is the same. It can only deal with videos that are exactly the same in all formats. Makes sense if there is no conversion.

All you can do is cut sections out and join identically formatted clips but it is lightening fast without loss of quality.

The newer releases still have a one pass. But the finished video looks like a gauze checkerboard is placed over it. The difference was motion detection.

That is very much the same with Machete. One would have to compare the filetypes that are supported to make the right choice.

I just edited a video with Avidemux. I only cut a few pieces out but a couple were not aligned on the keyframes. Avidemux was immediately complaining that I was using copy.

Makes sense if you think of it. Starting a section in the middle of a bunch of incrementals would not work in imaging either, LOL.

It only complains about keyframes if you are cutting a section from the middle rather than trimming the ends. You can search for keyframes using the double arrow buttons. They will usually line up with a change of scene.

Thanks Keith. I know. I am used to that when I use Machete. It behaves the same. But sometimes you do not have a lot of keyframes. Then you have to convert it anyhow.
