Issue extends right from install! Before it even gets installed. Loading the win 10 install, before the GUI even starts, the loading screen
With the win 10 logo and spinning dots its suffering full on sputtering. Dots stop spinning and hang for seconds before resuming for a few seconds. Then freezing again. Once in GUI, impossible to move accurately as mouse doesn't react to movement for up to 30 seconds then freezes again

When you ran HDtune, did it scan the whole disk or just the main partition? Looks like it scan the whole disk.

It may be that left over HP partition, maybe get rid of it? I don't see how in 10,000 hells it could cause this though. Maybe your install Medium is bad, download the USB install tool from Microsoft and build a new install disk, then try it again.

[edit] the image in your other post shows a Fat32 partition, maybe that's part of the problem?

Will get those screens up shortly. To last poster: clarification: you said you had to update the chips to "fix it", but that you ended up having to stick with windows 7/ubuntu? Did it fix it or not?
There was a known issue with the hard drive and windows 8 at the time. Acer had a firmware update to fix it. It fix it for some people, I was just not one of them. I didn't want to return the laptop. At the time it was a good price on a budget *gaming* laptop. Luckily I had a spare copy of windows 7 pro laying around. I'm a linux guy at heart so I send most of my free time in that OS. Unfortunately not all of the games I play are on linux yet, so had to make sure it had some version of windows on it :)

The chipset driver I was talking about basically the software for the motherboard and the integrated components. Such as the SATA controller for the hard drive. You will only find that on the manufacturers website: HP. I've been told that windows 8 drivers work well on windows 10. I recommend using win10 drivers if available. Looks like windows update and the iso had a version that works, but there might be a newer/better one straight from HP.
