Thank you, My Spot. What should I change the setting to?

The following settings are responsible on the ALPM:

    • ALPM – HIPM/DIPM. It will set the Link Power Management policy:
      • Active: Neither HIPM or DIPM allowed
      • HIPM: HIPM only is allowed
      • HIPM+DIPM:HIPM and DIPM are allowed
      • DIPM: DIPM only is allowed
      • Lowest:HIPM, DIPM and DEVSLP are allowed (if DEVSLP is supported by the storage device).

    • ALPM – Adaptive. It will set the period of AHCI link idle time before the link is put in the slumber state when you have HIPM, DIPM, HIPM+DIPM or Lowest set above. It can be set to be from 0 to 300,000 milliseconds. If the Active is set above, then this will have no effect.

I'm sorry... I may have been looking at the wrong instructions... Try this...

    1. Click Start button, choose Settings -> System -> Power & sleep -> Additional power settings.
    2. For your selected "Preferred plans" click 'Change plan settings' then 'Change advanced power settings'.
    3. Expand 'PCI Express -> Link State Power Management', turn off the option.

Please note that I used a different method so your results may vary. Also, in my case, every time the system froze, I had an associated error on the System Log... (“The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.”). In any case it worked for me.

    Updating with my results

    I uninstalled Acronis.

    No issues so far.

For me it was a virtual memory size problem.
System has (oddly) automatically set VM size at 512MB, I've enlarged it to 4-8G (min-max) and... no more freezes!
    Hope it helps.

Gone back to win 8.1, sick of hearing its frozen again and wife turning off screen and walking around with why do i even bother to try and use it. have tried most if not all of the hints via this forum even put extra ram in via usb ramdrive. Its a shame its little things that niggle and take the gloss of WIn10.

This is my 3rd time upgrading from Windows 7 Pro x64 to Windows 10. The last 2 times I fallback to Windows 7 due to the frequent freezing (it freeze after 5 min and then more erratic). After reading this thread, I uninstalled Acronis (before upgrading to Windows 10). [Fingers crossed] Until now, for the past 2 hours, there is no freezing.

[Update] No freezing now since the last upgrade.

I've been having this problem for the last few days (windows 10 previously ran for several weeks without ever freezing).

I added a new 4k monitor and a new mouse - but the system still freezes even when I revert to the previous hardware. Tried deleting all drivers. The monitor driver was unsigned and I booted into test mode to install it - could this be related?

The behaviour (everything becoming unresponsive, even CTRL+ALT+DEL not working) is what I'd expect to happen if I suddenly disconnected the boot drive, but I've checked for loose connections and all seems OK in that department.

I've tried most of the suggestions in this thread to no avail. System restore no good either. Running out of ideas.

Try to look at the Event error in the System Log to have an idea what's causing the problem.

Going from 7 to 10 you will have a problem with the Runtime Broker utilty. Search Runtime Broker fix. You can easily disable it using a registry change. Works like magic.
I had the same problem when I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7. If your running Win7 you probably had an older PC that may have come preloaded with apps from the Manufacturer. My was a Dell. What I found was that older applications are not compatible with Win 10 and they cause it to freeze up. In my case it was four "bloatware" apps from Dell. I deleted each using control panel - remove programs. Before doing so you can check the application online to see what it does. Most bloatware is just that, useless and unnecessary. Dell was famous for it five or six years ago. After they were removed. Win10 ran perfectly on my 2009 PC
