Win10 PC Won't Sleep Anymore

Win10 64bit V1903 with all published updates. Some weeks ago (maybe even longer) my PC stopped going to sleep after the specified time. I am setting the times in Power & Sleep. I have the screen set to turn off after an hour (and it does) and the PC to sleep after 2 hours but it doesn't. It used to. I have changed the sleep timer several times but that hasn't helped.

I've looked at Device Management to see anything suspicious there but not sure what to look for.

Suggestions on what to look for?

Hi Larry.

In device manager you are looking for adapters that have a yellow exclamation mark or any other type of marking on adapter. These are very small icons. Usually if adapter is in trouble Device manager will display with the appropriate section expanded.

I would also go to Windows Updates and review the entire list, especially the section on driver updates. See what has been installed in last month.

Are you running V1903 and if so when was it install. Should be listed as one of the the first items when you view Update History.

While you are looking in Update History did any fail? Did they subsequently install successfully.

To get version and build number you can right click Start, click Run, type Winver, enter. A window appears.

You could also restore power plan to defaults. Right click Start, click Power Options, on right click Additional Power Settings, click Change Plan Settings beside plan you are using, click Restore Default Settings for this plan.

If you open a command prompt(admin) or powershell(admin) and type the command

powercfg -a

it attempts to tell you what is acting up. Not a sure thing.

Ken, Thanks for the info.

Device Manager shows everything as normal.

The Win10 V1903 was installed in 9/26. No driver installs since then. All subsequent updates have installed successfully.

powercfg -a shows no issues. It just says that that the following sleep states are available:
Standby(3); Hibernate; Hybrid Sleep; Fast Startup. It also says that Standby S0, S1 and S2 are not supported.

I'll try resetting power plan to defaults.

I reset the power plan to defaults. That set the PC to sleep NEVER. I'll leave it like that overnight and then change it back to several hours. It also set the hard disk to power down in 20 minutes. This is not OK so I changed that to never.

We'll see what happens next.

So 1903 installed three weeks ago which coincides when issue started.

Odds are when 1903 installed it updated all drivers whether you needed new drivers or not. This approach drives me nuts.

Lets see if Energy Report drives out culprit.

I couldn't find 750xt on HP site. Found 750-600 and 750-100. Could you check label. Saw a firmware update that maybe in order if drivers are updated.

Ken,

This PC was bought a little over 4 years ago. Full name is 750-055xt. Processor is Intel Core i7-4790 CPU at 3.60HGz.
It wouldn't be on HP sites any more.

I took a look at the info on the Energy Report. Seems to be oriented to Laptops and batteries. Does it make sense for a tower which does not run on batteries?

A 4 year old pc most certainly will be on HP support site......and here you go.

That said, it only has support for windows 7 and 8.1

I would still run report, I've run on my desktops.

I would create an image with a tool like Macrium, see you use it, and I would downgraded the Intel Chipset and Management Engine drivers listed on the link Plankton has supplied using Windows 8.1 as OS

Is your BIOS up to date? Not saying to update, just is it at the most current release.

Plankton, That information is so wrong that it is silly. Of course Win 10 is supported on this PC. It has been running Win 10 since it first came out (seems like years ago). It was running Win 7 before that. Never ran Win 8.
The issue being addressed here only started when Win 10 v1903 installed.

Not to argue but support and will run are different things to vendors.

As it does not have specific drivers for 10 the vendor likely does not support Windows 10 on device. If you were to call them with an issue they would say we don't support even if you wanted to pay, install 7 or 8 and call us back.

Agree with you thousands of older devices "run" windows 10 and run it very well. I have a laptop built for XP and one built for Vista that I run Windows 10 on.

Same deal with older software, will it run on windows 10 or is it supported on Windows 10.

Larry,
You don't know just how lucky you are that "Sleep" defaults to "NEVER".
Ever since MS invented that POC, many odd years ago, it's been buggy. It may work OK for years and then all of a sudden NOT!!
I've taken many service calls over the years, where a PC went to sleep and didn't want to wake up.
For that very reason, I always set Sleep? to NEVER.
And I suggest, as an old PC Tech, that you do the same. It serves no real purpose.

If you're not using your computer, just turn it off. It will last longer and save on your electric bill too.
