You should be able to find an ISO for Windows 10 on the Net, make sure it is the exact same version you got. There are many placed to get them, just google it. If you find one, just run an in-place install. You will have to re-activate possibly, but that can be dealt with via a call to MS. Or, you can find a copy of MS Toolkit that can be used to backup your license and restore it. I don't know if that's a legit thing to do, I only use it for my own licenses on my own systems, in fact I just backed up a faulty Windows 7 license and restored it after a wipe and re-install, it just puts the same key back in. But I'm hoping you can call MS and just tell them you had to do an In-Place reinstall, and they should give you a new one, call them first if you are not sure, I'd do it anyway.

There is a huge difference between doing an OTA update and a disk based in-place install, this was an issue with windows 8.1 if I recall. It's always an issue with Apple devices like iPads and iPhones, I don't know what it is exactly, but something always goes wrong with an OTA update. So I avoid them at all costs lately.

Okey, thanks for your help really much, you did solve a lot with the problem I had with my interface so at least the menu got back working. Gonna try a system restore, not sure how I'm gonna be able to activate W10 again but can try the thing you suggested otherwise a call should do it. I hope the whole Windows community informs about the difference of the OTA update and disk based in-place install because of all the problems that the OTA does. Happy that you got it working though fully other than the issue with the interface my criticism with Windows 10 is based on a positive perspective, there is much positive things about the OS itself but it also has it's downsides, will always be like that, will mark the thread as solved even though it isn't really, could say it is halfly solved since some of the things still haven't worked. I'm thankful for everyones help really much, if there is anyone else out there that would experience same thing then try reinstall through ISO, in-place install should do it then as the best solution I got so far. Thanks :)

Might go back to Windows 7 or just doing a complete reset of Windows 10 have been confused if I shall do it or not, not the funniest but I think there isn't anything in my situation that could solve the interface to work again except a system restore. It is great to use the Shell though thanks for the tip, at least the Menu started to work but many of the icons nope :)
Well good, at least there was THAT. Heh.

If anything, you can restore Windows 7, then you can update using a disk. If you do, find a Win 10 Pro disk image, it should update you and activate you. Run the setup from within Windows 7.

I've done this twice, and it allowed me the Pro update on each machine, I don't know why, but it worked.

Sounds good following those steps right now, should solve everything, thanks for the help again, very appreciated. Best solution so far even if it is a restore, at least the restore resets everything so that's good. In-place install for the win :)

    Hey!

I had been using the Windows 10 start menu since yesterday but now some hour ago it stopped completely working and I can't access my calendar, search bar or Cortana or click on anything on it. The only thing I can do is right click. I have tried to figure out how to get the Windows 10 update window up to see if there is any new update but without having access to the start menu I have no idea how I can do that.

Would anyone have any idea how to solve it, so I can get the start menu to function again? :)

    Hello OP,

I had the same problem, and tried multiple fixes so I could resolve the issue, the only thing that worked was to do a clean install, just backup your files and run a clean install and it would hopefully work.

Yeah the easiest thing would be to do a clean install. With the new operating system it goes more swiftly easier because of just restoring the system with having the option of only removing the installed applications (which may be irritating) but still it keeps all the personal files on the system. The start menu is great but I hope it may be updated soon enough :)

I don't recommend doing a clean install.. I had the same problem and wasted the time to do a clean install. It worked at first, then a little later it quit working again. Very frustrated with this issue.

    Hi Travis,

Very correct, the problem in itself is not solved lol, clean install does it temporarily but not permanently. As long as the computer receives a BSOD; it will be the likely instance of the start menu becoming corrupted. Now my start menu won't work agian and even Microsoft Edge is completely gone from it, it was there from beginning but not anymore. I'd agree on the frustration, first you get the Windows 10 experience you want and then the next moment it is completely gone as you can't use any apps anymore, you can't use the Microsoft Edge browser and can't even search for apps. It feels as there is only access to the normalcy folders and be able to browse pictures on the computer. I'm currently on the iexplore browser, it doesn't feel good to install either Firefox or Chrome if it was intended that I wanted to use Microsoft Edge from beginning but since the whole start menu is corrupted it is wierd. I've done two to three rolling system restores just to get my start menu back working but doing it everyday is not a fun continous problem to have.

After trying everything else, this worked for me :

    • Open regedit.exe
    • Right click on HKEY_Users and select properties
    • Make sure that "All Application Packages" exists, and has Read Permission
    • Repeat for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    • Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Check the subkeys HARDWARE, SAM,SOFTWARE,SYSTEM. Make sure that All Application Packages has the Read permission.

    Done
