That screen shows/allows a ROLLBACK to your prior OS for 30 days

Not the same option used by RESET THIS PC

If you rollback back to windows 8 the windows 8 RESET feature will still RESET to factory settings..
After the 30 Day rollback period - you will only get the windows 10 RESET feature
But you should still retain the factory image partition
The drive is a bit tight on space - where does Windows.old get created?

You have a Venue, right? Is the Dell recovery partition on the SD card or on the internal drive?
I know you know a lot about Recovery and you have a similar device ... have you upgraded your Dell tablet?

If you have, then you're the member the Thread Starter should talk to. There seems to be slight differences between PC Windows and Tablet Windows, at least as far as I've read.

    Thanks.

I have a venue 32GB drive - I deleted the Recovery partition prior to the upgrade
BUT, I have the factory recovery on USB.. Well not really, I have since copied the Recovery Media Files from USB to a folder on a second HDD and freed up my USB

    I have C as 18.4GB freespace on a 28.5GB drive

I have also tested the windows 10 reset and a clean windows 10 installation

So unless you have a provisioning package - you will need a usb mouse to reinstall the system drivers

    Hmm!

Both the option to go back to W8.1 and to Reset the tablet to factory settings are still there. Looks like the message in the "Get Windows 10" thing was a mistake.

Can you do me another favor? Go to C:\ and tell me if you see a Windows.old folder.
yes there is, its a 10GB folder , mind that my Venue its the model with 64GB emmc storage.

Due to the conflicting information on the Dell site, I think Dell is the best source for your answers. OEMs are supporting Win10 all the way, so you should get some great response from Dell even if their web pages are wonky.

You can chat with them about your specific device and the tasks you need to perform (create a recovery drive,), what the messages mean (Dell won't be the contact for Win10 support???), and how to get he best upgrade experience. Ask them detailed questions (can I connect a USB drive to do a backup - how do I do that .... After I upgrade what Dell software will run [relates to the factory restore message - you can always download the Dell 'bloat', if you use it now, will it run on Win10???]).
Dell's support is a piece of garbage. I've already wasted my time with them on Twitter and I got no where.

Regarding your question, the SD card that's in the tablet is my own, a Samsung 32GB EVO SD Card. It has nothing on it.

Do you think you could save everything on your tablet onto an SD card, then bite the bullet and test out the "Reset This PC" function? I know it's a lot to ask, please let me know if you're willing to test this.

Sorry no, I don't have the time to customise again the tablet. also, I know that a 'reset this pc' wont install the Dell drivers on my Venue, as 'thanks' to Dell after I sent it for a repair they completely wiped the emmc and installed the 8.1 without recovery ! I had some issue after that and I only managed to reinstall the OS via an iso from the tabletpcreview forum...

@bobjoe, BTW is your BIOS A10? I read somewhere that only with A10 you can boot from the OTG USB.

Thanks anyways... What was the problem you had with it?

I'm on the latest BIOS provided by Dell Update. I just checked around the Advanced Startup section in W8 and it seems you can boot from removable media, so hopefully that includes SD cards?

Test booting from an SD card, before you actually get yourself in a position where you need to. My laptop has a built in SD card reader but will not boot from it. If I put that same SD Card in an SD to USB adapter I can boot from it. The built in SD Card reader does not show up as a boot option in the BIOS.

1st level support is not very good for difficult issues anywhere. They handle pedestrian calls very well though.
Twitter? How far did you expect to get 140 characters at a time?

If you call support, you have to go through 1st level, but after a while, you can ask to speak to a person in a higher level.
You might have to call back and tell the rep that you already called and that you now what to go up a level. Some organizations have more than two levels of support, not getting anywhere at level 2? See if there is a senior person who you can answer your inquiry.

Higher levels do require more wait time though - put the phone on speaker and enjoy the music. When the rep answers I usually break the ice by saying "Hey, could you put me back on hold ... that was a great song" They laugh and the entire process is much easier.

Thanks for the info on the SD card. I was thinking that you could use that as the destination for a backup image, not as a boot.
If you wanted, you could get a new SD card and use that instead of the current SD card - probably safer that way.

Good luck, I'll bow out now. Members with the device will be of more help.

    Bill
