Is W10 1903 stable enough to replace 1809?

Gee, wotta surprise. A six month release cadence and every release has to have some "sizzle." So I'm going to guess if Microsoft is like other places I've seen, important new features or revisions that require more than six months total to design, code, test and document, those features are on the bottom of the list. And after a while, everyone who has responsibility for that list has their hair on fire.

So that bootable USB I created for 1903. Should I just erase it for now?

Bugs never get detected if people do not get updated. The rate of bugs being reported is probably lower than on any previous build.

I have yet to see any serious bugs - most complaints are either sandbox not working or icons are inconsistent.

The best advice is make an image backup and try it.

So far, no issues here either,..

I have 1903 build18362.145,.. installed on two of three home computers. I have it on an Acer Aspire AXC-703G-UW51. On this computer, I used the update assistant tool. Took about 90 minutes.

I also installed it through Windows Update, on my Dell Inspiron--15- 5558, with no issues whatsoever at this point.

I am holding off on my Toshiba c55t A-5102 ( Which is also my oldest laptop ) Been testing and running both computers pretty hard, and so far so good.

I noticed after updating these two computers, I had to re-do my Home network again, as they stopped seeing each other.

By the way,.. Not an Insider here !

I installed 1809 twice and twice went back to 1803, the second install of 1809 was acceptable but still decided to go back. This time with 1903, minutes after installing it, I knew it was a keeper. It felt good right away. Eight days later, I have no (major) complains or doubts regarding the update. The system feels stable, nothing has crashed. My only wish is that MS stops reinventing water (creating new processes that do nothing useful).

    Hi there
Working on a number of machines with no issues for me : All are W10 X-64 PRO.

Note however that upgrade might still fail on any machine where this is attempted with a USB HDD / SSD / thumb drive attached. Remove those before upgrading via WU or using UUPDUMP. My preferred option is UUPDUMP but how you upgrade is your preference.

    Cheers

For me stability was never in question, some features new or old may be (miss)behaving but system integrity was never in question. All told neither worse or better than 1809.

I upgraded to 1903 a Week or two ago and haven't experienced any Issues yet. This will be different for other People though, including you. Do expect to see Bugs in a new Update.

Microsoft will start rolling out Patches, Security-Fixes and Improvements to 1903 overtime until the next Update(1909) arrives. Now, should you upgrade? That's a decision that's made up to you. Again, there are Bugs that others are experiencing and the Microsoft Windows Team are working hard to get those Issues fixed.

If you are wondering if it is stable at the moment then maybe stick to 1809 just now until around Late-June to Early-July in which some Patches and Improvements will have been rolled out by then.

I have removed both useless processes: SearchUI.exe and StartMenuExperienceHost.exe. TextInput.InputApp.exe can be disabled or uninstalled, well it is not running on mine PC.
I have just made the experiment by renaming the Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy folder. But in doing so this completely malfunctions the Start menu from opening when you click on the Start button! Doesn't that not do it to yours as well?

I renamed it back to how it is and Start is working again. But consumes 20MB RAM. The RAM consumption of 1903 is definitely a tad higher and it is because of this process. In 1809 my RAM was 1.0/1.1GB. But in 1903 this has jumped to 1.1/1.2GB.

When playing a PC game like FIFA the memory of StartMenuExperienceHost.exe only dropped to 15MB RAM.

TextInput.InputApp.exe I simply renamed that folder to InputApp_cw5n1h2txyewyDISABLED, at least that's not so important or critical as it won't break anything.

If I had 16GB or more RAM then I wouldn't have cared or worried. But 8GB RAM in this day and age is only fine if the background processes don't suck resources. This is why imho I think Windows 8.1 is more suitable for systems with less than 8GB RAM, but I might be wrong. I haven't done much gaming on Win 10 to come to conclusions, but I still think every RAM is precious.

And judging by the slower boot times in Win 10 compared to 8.1 it makes me wonder if the higher RAM consumption has anything to do with it.
