Crash and Burn - my very short-lived membership of Tenforums!

My three or four year old Laptop has been running Win8.1 (plus Classic Shell) for ages. It has been a wee bit slow but otherwise fine. My desktop is on Win 7 and will remain so!

Probably against my better judgement, I installed Windows 10 on Day 1 or 2. (Never buy version 1 of anything!)

Despite my worries, I was pleasantly surprised that the laptop eventually booted straight into "Classic Shell Mode" and, apart from a few colour changes, was almost indistinguishable from the previous (Win8) system . It seemed to run fast and well and the Classic Shell interface meant it was just like the Windows I have known and loved for years - none of those horrid blue box things.

While exploring the system - I cant remember how I did it - probably with Windows Key or Alt plus something - I somehow got out of the "Classic Shell mode" and into the "Windows Ugly Blue Box mode". While I tried to figure out how the hell to actually do anything useful with these blue boxes, I realised that the laptop was running HOT - REALLY HOT. The CPU temperature was 80'C and the fan was going mad although no applications were running.

I immediately switched the laptop off and am about to reinstall my backup Windows 8.1 installation. Hopefully I haven't damaged anything.

So, Hello and Goodbye to all you Tenforums members. I wish you all a happier and longer membership than I had.

    Give it another shot

It's a pity to walk away from such a potentially powerful upgrade. If you haven't already switched back, try turning on task manager to identify the offending process/service/program that is churning your CPU. The solution might be a simple as a reinstall of a program. Anyway, best of luck.

    Gone back to Win8.1

Have now gone back to Win8. The laptop now feels much more 'relaxed'.
When in Windows 10, with no apps running, the 'background' CPU usage was around 35%. While running just one program (Easeus Backup) it averaged about 90% CPU usage. The core temperature was around 80-85'C

Back in Windows 8.1 the CPU usage is around 6 - 10% 'at rest' and around 45% whilst running the same backup program. (Information from Addgadgets CPU Usage program)

The laptop has an I5-3210 2.5Ghz CPU with 8gig Ram and 500 gig HDD
