FINALLY SOLVED: Windows 10 Start Button Not Working, Cortana, Edge and Store Not Working - YouTube

I have experienced this after messing with Windows services and packages via dism.
Undoing changes did bring the functionality back.

I have attached a batch file to reset all services (and optionally device drivers) to defaults.
Coupled with the solution posted above by flhthemi, should fix most cases.

Last time I used a bat file from this forum, it locked up my machine. I would suggest to everyone that is still having this problem, to get the Anniversary Update installed. Microsoft did finally address the problem and it's fixed in Windows 10 Version 1607.

the last update for win10 TP caused my start menu -> shutdown button to stop working, now when i should be able to choose sleep/restart/shut down by pressing the power button, it instead drops me back to the desktop.

its not the huge issue since i can do the thingie via locking off from the desktop, but its still annoying

I have not heard of any start button problems from anyone that is running the 1607 version I want everybody to be aware of not trusting random batch files. BE CAREFUL.

I've been trying to do some of the suggested solutions on this page, but I have some additional problems which prevent me from doing so. E.g. I cannot start Powershell as an admin, not even with the solution suggested in the reply before me, because when I replaced CMD with Powershell in the right-click start "menu", it simply won't start and neither can I right click on anything in a folder or the taskbar itself with the exception of right-clicking on the start icon or right-clicking tray-icons like Dropbox. Also the start menu won't appear, neither does the search option, even Edge won't start (I'm using Chrome anyways). Some times the task bar freezes, but tray-icons like Dropbox will still show that it's updating something when it is updating something and remain normal when it's doing nothing. I can right-click the background, but neither the screen settings and the costumization will open. I can however still use Winkey+R and open stuff from there. But the main problem is, I cannot open anything as an admin, because right-clicking does not work.
I found a work around to that: Try to open File Manager, then go to 'Local Computer', and type 'Powershell' in the little search bar, and look for 'Powershell.exe' in the search results. That's how I managed to find it and get it running as an admin.

I don't kmow if it's still hrere, but I remember what it did to my system when I ran it. I lost everything, had to do clean install from ISO file, which I still say is the best answer.

Just figured id share how I finally ended up solving my issue with cortana and search bar. I put the file on google drive, download the file and open and locate "enable cortana" if it asks you for consent, click continue continue ok until the dialog box closes. The last one should say that it was successful. Sign out of your account and sign back in. Thats it! solved for me. I was nearly ready to do a restore.

    Enable Cortana.reg - Google Drive

Backup registry first to be safe, I know I should warn on that. Though it should not be an issue.
