    Disabling C States fixed Windows 10 Crashes

    Hi,

    I had Win10 system lockups from a fresh install on a new custom build seemingly at random once every 2 hours on average on the desktop under low usage but within 5 mins if I ran a Heaven Benchmarking demo. I seem to have fixed this as no lockups in the last 3 days. Here are the steps I took, the first two didn't have any effect:

    1. Turned off the Power Management Feature - Advanced Settings \ PCI Express \ Link State Power Management - Previously set to Moderate [SYSTEM STILL CRASHES]
    2. Turned off the Power Button Feature - Fast Startup [SYSTEM STILL CRASHES]
    3. Disabled "Core C6 States" in the BIOS. [NOT CRASHED SINCE]

    The C States are basically low power modes the CPU can enter when idle but it seems either entry into the state or waking up from it was causing my system hangs. Worth trying if you haven't already, plenty on google if you want to search for CPU C States.

    My Build:
    Power = Super Flower Leadex GOLD 1000W
    Mobo = Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard
    CPU = AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9590 Blk Ed 4.70GHz (5.00GHz Turbo) (Socket AM3+)
    RAM = Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz
    GFX = MSI GTX 980TI Gaming Graphics Card
    HDD1 = Samsung 2.0TB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive
    HDD2 = WD Red 6TB 5400rpm SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD

    I have quoted Funks below who also seemed to correct the issue by turning off Core States on his BIOS. Interestingly he has an Intel Quad Core and mine is an AMD Eight Core the common theme is that we both have Asus Motherboards \ Windows 10 and disabling the C States rectified our crashes.

    Hope this helps someone fix their hangs.

    I upgraded my

    ASUS P5Q PRO TURBO
    Q9550
    8 GIGS of RAM
    Corsair Foce GT SSD
    750TI Video Card

    to Windows 10 earlier this week and was getting freeze up (which seemed to only happen during a cold boot) with no BSOD requiring a reset. Finally figure out what was causing it - it was the "ENHANCED C-STATES" on the BIOS. If I have it enabled, problem happens, if I don't, - works just fine.

    SPEEDSTEP and C1E is enabled though.

    My problems as well!

    Like many others I am having random freezing that only removing the power will enable the computer to be re-started. I had been running Windows 7 Professional with all the latest updates for some time without a single problem.
    I have tried to upgrade to Windows 10 dozens of times, each time it works for a short while then starts to randomly lock up. My method of restoring to Windows 7 is to keep it and all my programs on a Hard Drive. I then disconnect the SSD, connect the hard drive and check for Windows and other Updates. I then re-connect the SSD, format it and clone the Hard drive to it. I then remove the hard drive. I run the computer for a few hours to see that all is stable then upgraded to Windows10. This does not go 100% smoothly as it reaches the ‘Welcome! Screen’ with the ‘next button’ in the bottom left hand corner – which has no effect and the only way is to switch the power off and re-start. Windows 10 then appears to work quickly until it starts to lock up. I’m getting to the point to reverting to Windows 7 permanently. Please can anyone help!
    I have triedsfc \scannow – plus most of the other ideas no effect.
    My systemis:
    Mother Board Gigabyte: H81M-S2PV
    Processor:Intel Core i3 4170 3.7GHz.
    Crucialmemory 8GB (only 4 GB used as 32 bit programs in use)
    GraphicsCard: Gigabyte R5 230 1GB DDR3 VGA Dual Link DVI HDMI PCI-E
    Crucial250GB SSD and no hard drive at the moment.
    LiteOn iHAS124 24X Internal DVD Writer with SATA.
    No other peripherals.
    I have two other computers, one with a Gigabyte motherboard and an ancient Compaq laptop both of which updated without a hitch and haven ever frozen or anything!

    Ok. So I had the same problem that many people are describing here and I tried just about everything to fix it with no luck. However, today I came across a post which suggested to run a "chkdsk" via the admin command prompt. After waiting SIX HOURS for the process to complete, my computer is completely back to normal. I have left the computer running for several hours now and have not experienced a single freeze. This is amazing considering that my computer was freezing between 7 and 10 times per day. So here is what worked for me:

    1.) Right click start and select "Command Prompt (Admin)
    2.) Type "chkdsk /r/f" (no quotes)
    3.) It will tell you that it cannot check the disk as it is currently in use. It will then ask if you would like to perform the task at the next start up. Type Y and press enter.
    4.) Restart the computer and make yourself comfortable because it may be a long wait.

    Mine took six hours, but I read that for some computers it took over 24 hours. I also read that the check disk process may appear to be stuck at some percentage for a while without progressing. However, do not reboot the computer during this process. There may be a bit of a lag on reporting the percent completed and it may not actually be stuck.

    I hope this is able to help someone out there! Best of luck!

    success after freezing

    I have a HP z800 with 32Gig RAM that I "inadvertently" upgraded to Windows 10 after many prompts to do so. Perhaps one of my kids hit a return on the keyboard and it went ahead. Regardless, after doing so, my server became a boat anchor as it would constantly freeze after 5 minutes of use.

    I basically use the z800 as a music server and backup server.

    I have a Crucial MX100 SSD 256 GB drive with the OS on it and two other regular hard drives for backups. With the purchase of the MX100 I was given an OEM version of Acronis 2014 which I had been using.

    I followed this thread and did the points mentioned by "illadvised" on 18 Aug 2015 ... no luck. I saw that many users had issues with Acronis so went ahead and completely uninstalled Acronis 2014. I then spent $59.99 on an Acronis version 2016 (blind purchase ... did not even test if removal of 2014 did anything). I rebooted and my system is now running fine since then. It has only been a few hours, but the system only would go about five minutes before. so my fingers are crossed.

    Also of note was that one of my regular drive would constantly be reading over and over before the removal of Acronis and reinstall of 2016 (disk head constantly clicking). That is also fixed.

    There is also mention of a new driver for the Crucial MX100 which I may install if necessary, in some of the responses to this thread.

    I have to say that both Microsoft, and especially Acronis are pretty lame companies for having software that either does not flag or warn of incompatibilities, and especially Acronis for not having any solution updates or advisories that their products can render a system useless after upgrade. I would never buy another Acronis product and am kind of irritated at myself for purchasing it altogether.

    I will update this thread in a few days with how my system does in the days ahead, and if the issues resurface.

    With most computer problems the solutions is simple this is mine!
    As I said in my earlier post I cloned the hard drive with W7 on it to the SSD. I did this using Acronis True Image 14. My cure was then to delete Acronis True Image 14 from the SSD before upgrading to W10. Having done this the upgrade went like a dream with no hang-ups and has kept going through various customising and re-starts since.
    I hope this helps someone.
    Regards,
    David.

    I used Acronis software a while ago. After uninstallation, I found low level Acronis disk drivers / filters still installed which were very hard to remove. I've never used Acronis software since!

    I don't usually post to forums but wanted to share my experience and a possible solution or method for finding a solution.

    My win10 upgrade resulted in random stops. The system is a Dell XPS. There are a number of disks attached and I use VMware. However the disks and virtual machines were running without issues before the upgrade therefore it seemed unlikely that there was a hardware fault.

    In my WIN7 configuration I did not use "Onedrive" or "Google Drive". In Win10 I had installed Google Drive and Onedrive is present by default.

    I disabled "Onedrive" and uninstalled Google Drive. The system is now stable (it no longer freezes).

    I hope that helps someone. BTW, I note that the acronym for "Windows Ten Forum" is WTF. That seems appropriate, given the grief that Win10 has caused me so far.

    My issues (3 up to 25 freezes a week) seem to be completely gone, since I followed aLca's suggestion three weeks ago. His suggestion: "Disable dynamic processor ticks" - can be found on page 58.

    Good luck!

    My issues with freezing have been completely resolved with the update to Acronis. No issues for a week now.
