Evening All, I signed up to these forums, as I am too having trouble with Windows 10 basically locking up my whole PC and m having to do a complete Hard Reboot.

I build a brand new custom PC, I went down the Skylake route, which now I am actually regretting. I wanted to install my OEM copy of Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate but somehow it doesn't accept the disk, brings up the launch menu and everything to install then it comes up with a error and says some files are missing.

So I bit the bullet and upgraded to Windows 10, All was fine for about the first 2 days, after that I was getting nVidia drivers crashing. I fixed these within the 3D control panel there was a error as I am running SLi Cards. Great I thought, I then purchased a recent game called Squad. I tried to start the game via Steam but I got that horrible lock up, cant use mouse everything freezes can't use keyboard, HARD reset time.

I ended up fixing that problem through my nvida nvcuda.dll thought great. Two days later aka today. My computer has locked up over 9 or 10 times. As soon as I power on and then sit and wait, go to open a program and then it locks up again. I hav gone through everything even going as far as to speaking to Microsoft technical support as they are ****ing useless. (My grandma could do a better job with the space shuttle than they could do making a OS.)

So basically I am unable to use my PC as the lockup occurs, I have tried a clean install of Windows 10 (Locks up when Installing that too)

I am at a complete loss other than taking my PC to a specialist and paying for them to fix it or even a way around Windows 7 and getting that installed. I have seen some patch fixes from the likes of ASRock and a few others where you can install onto a Skylake chip.

If anyone else has any ideas for my problem please shoot me a reply or if anyone has anything similar to this happen to them, I will go ahead and place my PC specs below.

    i7 6700K Skylake @ 4.0ghz
MSI Nvidia TURBO OC GTX 970 x 2 SLi
    ASUS Z170-E DDR4 Motherboard
    Corsair Vengance DDR4 2 x 8GB DDR4 3200mhz RAM
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD
    1 x Samsung Evo 850s 512GB SSD
    Corsair Gold PSU 1000w

If anyone has any ideas, please throw them below.

read my latest posts a few pages ago. there maybe (and hopefully, because this will give us a clear point who's fault and we will know how to handle this) a problem with intels new skylake.

many people report random freezes with the skylake cpu, regardeless if it's an i5 or i7, if the ram is oc'd or not or the mb manufacturer, and intel is about to look for it.

How I solved it in my case

    Hello guys.

I decided to post my experience concerning the random freezes / hangs on Windows 10 and how I solved it in my situation in the hope it might help anyone else having this same very annoying problem.

So, what was happening in my case was that after a certain period of time (~20mins) following a successful clean install of Windows 10 Home (not upgrade) the PC would random hang and everything would freeze except the mouse pointer which would turn into a spinning wheel. Couldn't do anything or interact with anything and had to resort do a hard shutdown of the system (holding power button). In one ocasion, I waited it out and I got a BSOD with the code "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED".

This would happen when using the drivers that Windows installed automatically for my system but also if I installed the updated mobo/graphics/sound drivers myself right after the fresh install (tried it both). By the way, I was also running the latest version for my BIOS.

So after lots of searching and reading on the internets I noticed most folks that were having these issues were running Windows 10 from SSDs. I'm using a Crucial M4 myself so I decided to check for firmware updates on Crucial's site.

So that's when I found out that some of the first firmware versions for my drive had a problem that made the SSD behave erraticaly after the drive had a certain amount of power-on hours under its belt which could cause freezes and BSODs. Crucial have since fixed the problem in one of the following firmware versions but since I have my drive for a long time now and never updated the firmware (yeah, I know I know...) I decided to check. And like I suspected, my firmware version was still one of the first ones, before the fix.

So I went ahead and updated my firmware to the newest version available and I never had the freezes / hangs again in Windows 10. Even left the PC running for about 6 hours or so, doing some random stuff in it from time to time in order to test it and it ran fine! \o/

Just as an extra note, during my searches I also remember someone mentioning solving this same problem by running some sort of sanitization process on his/her SSD. Not sure what the person in question meant with it but I think it was something about clearing/realocating bad sectors, I'm really not sure but it might be worthy of some investigation.

Really hope everyone having issues can figure those out soon and start enjoying the new OS since tbh it seems to be great!

Best of luck to all and happy new year !
    Trellisaze.

I did a litle more research into my Event Logs from all the crashes, All of my lock ups are caused by Nvidia Display Drivers. I uninstalled them today and the machine is working perfectly. Apparently Windows 10 is having a hard time handling them and locks up my PC, I have unistalled them while I partition my HDD AND SSD for me to be able to put Windows 7 onto the machine. Weeks of problems all caused by nvidia.

Oops, didn't see your latest post. How did you see the driver problems in event logs? Did the NVidia driver crash each time before the computer froze?

I didn't get any onscreen message before the lock up of my PC, I just uninstalled the drivers as I had problems with them prior to all the lock ups. So when I could get on the PC I went back through all my event logs and it was all NVIDIA crash logs. At all the times it happened. I reinstalled the drivers to test my theory and started getting the crashes again. I also reported it to NVIDIA and they are as baffled as me. I sent them some of the logs before I went ahead and reinstalled Windows 7 so maybe they update the WHQL drivers soon to fix some crashing issues people are having.

    a new statement from intel:
    Hello All,
Intel has identified an issue that potentially affects the 6th Gen Intel® Core™ family of products. This issue only occurs under certain complex workload conditions, like those that may be encountered when running applications like Prime95. In those cases, the processor may hang or cause unpredictable system behavior. Intel has identified and released a fix and is working with external business partners to get the fix deployed through BIOS.
let's hope the manufactures will update their bios fast and let's hope a lot more, that this will fix our freezes!

Had a new Dell computer hanging randomly; would run for several hours and then freeze (usually overnight). The event files and logs were of no help. All drivers up to date, etc.

On the third or fourth occasion I noticed, coincidentally, that Firefox was still open (running latest version of Firefox).

I did two things; increased the size of virtual memory and made sure that Firefox was shut down when not in use. For the past few days, no problem.
