Have been getting these random freezes also since updating to AU. Happens very randomly so I have no idea what causes it, and event viewer doesn't seem to show much apart from a kernel error as always.

Disable Core C6 State in BIOS

    hargcore said: View Post
    Hi,

I had Win10 system lockups from a fresh install on a new custom build seemingly at random once every 2 hours on average on the desktop under low usage but within 5 mins if I ran a Heaven Benchmarking demo. I seem to have fixed this as no lockups in the last 3 days. Here are the steps I took, the first two didn't have any effect:

    1. Turned off the Power Management Feature - Advanced Settings \ PCI Express \ Link State Power Management - Previously set to Moderate [SYSTEM STILL CRASHES]
    2. Turned off the Power Button Feature - Fast Startup [SYSTEM STILL CRASHES]
    3. Disabled "Core C6 States" in the BIOS. [NOT CRASHED SINCE]

The C States are basically low power modes the CPU can enter when idle but it seems either entry into the state or waking up from it was causing my system hangs. Worth trying if you haven't already, plenty on google if you want to search for CPU C States.

    My Build:
Power = Super Flower Leadex GOLD 1000W
    Mobo = Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard
    . . .
Hope this helps someone fix their hangs.
It sure helped fix my hangs! THANK YOU!!

My custom build includes an Asus Pro Gaming 970 mobo.

And my computer would freeze almost every time it woke up from sleep. It would display the desktop and then freeze right then.

I had tried numerous other things. Nothing worked.

And just as you found, disabling "Core C6 State" in the BIOS eliminated the problem!

Once you clued me in, I did a google search and found that other have encountered the same problem: Random freezes that were fixed by disabling Core C6 State.

I have just noticed that while I was looking at this thread because I have just done an update also to ten and am having the freezing issues.....It froze when I was browsing the thread....I did however notice that I could still scroll through the web page with the up and down keys.....I'm guessing this would rule out a complete system freeze as surely the screen be unresponsive....could this just be a mouse / cursor issue maybe with drivers ect ect......

Hi! I have been getting these random freezes a couple of times now which locks up the entire system and forces me to do a hard restart and i have tried EVERYTHING to resolve it, but no luck. I tried updating all drivers to the newest, did a sfc /scannow which repaired all the corrupt files, firmware update of HDD and defragging the HDD.
I know there is nothing wrong with my hardware because this ONLY happens in Windows 10 and not in Windows 8.1. This is the 2nd time i'm installing Windows 10 to see if the issue was resolved somehow, but nope. Also tried with a upgrade and with a clean install 2 times.

Does anyone have any tips or fixes for this? It's really starting to drive me crazy..
Drivers problem and gpu flickering and restarting in none sli mode was gpu problem it was not in pcie express slot all the way due to waterblock
Next nvidia was still going crasy so i was have to go under Administrator login - admin and reinstall Nvidia drivers since then HDMI problem in seeng my projector is not any more there not hdmi connected to its port even after sleep mode is all good )
And had like you describe issue whit windows randomly reboot first was CPU overclock ) my bad
But then it was not much of that my ssd from Kingstone died ( thats seems to be the case so if you can try diferend HDD
Lucky for me my was under waranty )
Windows was plying up like made whit random crashes just before bios smart feature came up and show that ssd is faulty
So far i am all good on windows10
My neighbour had glitches as soon he installs all drivers and not all drivers are made same hees web cam crashes windows 10 on his pc my pc eny pc due to driver not compateble its like web camera ciller as soon you start up windows web cam app Bdoom crash )
Had randoom crashes due to motherboard broken it had masive heat sink so it bended motherboard badly and craced it where it sits on cpu
If still having issue whit randoom crashes chek HWinfo64 its good showing all tems and clocks ) maybe you find that north bridge is overheating or somthing like that which is related to your board )
Windows7 is to good as soon go win10 it stresses pc like mad )))
Its about the same if you start Grid2 game on pc if you can play it 2 -5 hours no crashes pc is good if it crashes whell overclock is done wrong )

It seems older pcs have this hanging issue. However, I got a lap and desktop 5 years ago. They are very similar. The laptop accepted the upgrade from 7 perfectly while the desktop has had hanging and mouse issues. I suspect drivers that cannot be updated from the manf as the OS is different.

Were you able to fix your problem with your PC freezing after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

I have the same Problem since the AU. Sometimes it does not freeze even after 5+ hours of gaming and browsing and idleing and sometimes it just freezes after 10 Minutes.

If you did fix your Problem, what have you done to fix it? If you still have the same issue, what have you tryed to fix it?

I have tryed nearly everything until now.

If someone has an Idea, please help.

    Update:
Fixed it by updating all Drivers with IObit Update Manager as maranna suggested. No Problems after the Updates.

I apologize for not finishing the thread as I usually do.
You never know what does it, but I think, using IObit's Driver Updater -free, I fixed the hanging/ freezing.
    It is now stable.
Dell would only recognize my PC as Win 7 not 10 so I could not use the manufacturer as you are supposed to do.
IObit Update Manager updated 11 drivers, and I have had no troubles since.
I had to buy a new mouse but the old was worn.
Please let me know if updating your drivers fixes your problem.
    Peter
I also ran SFC to check the files.

Just Google 'IObit free driver updater' and follow the prompts; I don't see any problems.
If you still want I will send you a link but it is as easy as I said.
I agree that many of the driver programs are trials or cost $ when you download them, but this is upfront + o.k.
Let us know how you do and I hope the drivers updated will stabilize your operating system and Machine. I think you will be better off as many problems with 10 were drivers.

So I'm gonna start using normal sleep mode settings and see what happens, but I have a high confidence that disabling the C-State's is was fixed it. Been running for over 12 hours now without issue.

Having read I think all the threads online, it may be time document this. As you can see from my posts, I've been hammering this issue pretty much 24/7 for a couple of weeks. There are SEVERAL things that CAN cause windows 10 to misbehave, but they are easy to rule out.

    • Check temps and fan speeds (make sure nothing is overheating re: hwinfo)
    • Check the Event Log and Event History (look for causes of the freeze, likely won't find any, but look)
    • Run task manager open on the performance tab and open the resource monitor. (Sort to items in the Resource Monitor by the CPU column to you can see what was running when the system freezes.)
    • Run MemCheck (just to make sure, especially if you are building a new machine the foundation is solid)
    • Drivers being correct and up-to-date. (yeah we probably all did that first)
    • Running the sfc scan (just to make sure none of the freezes corrupted or damaged anything)
    • Running CheckDSK scan (to ensure non of the freezes corrupted or damaged any files.)
    • Set the PSIe Link Mode to off if applicable (might need/want it on laptop, not much use on a desktop).
    • UNpark the CPU's (again, might not want to on Laptop, but might help with troubleshooting)
    • Disable C-States.. (short version, disables the ability of the PC to underClock itself.) This was the winner for me.
Thanks mileskb, Went through your list and finally Disabling C-State fixed my problem. A hint that that might be a problem was when left unintended it took my Carbon X1 time to respond to a command. Many of you will find no specific reference to the C-State in your bios. Simply disable "CPU power management" same thing.
    Thanks again
