I got a very nice email from the author of that story, Ed Bott, yesterday, and have since changed my blog post to include warning not to use this utility. I dug into it with NotePad++ and found the majority of the PowerShell directives therein available in clear text (now also appended to that same blog post). As far as I can tell, the utility's directives are mostly benign (and widely recommended here and elsewhere for system repair) but the resetting of all apps and settings could indeed cause user problems. Thanks for bringing those findings to the community's attention. I also withdraw my earlier suggestion.

I just updated to version 1607 and it seems to be doing this whenever I try to play online games (mainly league of legends) it would freeze at the start of the game a couple times causing me to do a hard restart (holding down the power button until my laptop shuts off) and then after a couple times of freezing it would usually be fine. It was fine before the update, so I'm not sure exactly what is causing the issue.

I had lots of system freezes with a clean install of the anniversary update from USB. The whole system just seems to lock up for almost a minute or more. It does it exiting games, process hacker, sumatraPDF etc. I will be going back to the build 1511 due to them, the new build should have had much more beta testing on it as these freezes, webcams not working, drives showing as RAW etc should have been fixed before it was released.

Try a Clean Boot. If that works, add one startup item at a time rebooting each time till the computer freezes, then you will know the problematic program or driver.

So I'm gonna start using normal sleep mode settings and see what happens, but I have a high confidence that disabling the C-State's is was fixed it. Been running for over 12 hours now without issue.

Having read I think all the threads online, it may be time document this. As you can see from my posts, I've been hammering this issue pretty much 24/7 for a couple of weeks. There are SEVERAL things that CAN cause windows 10 to misbehave, but they are easy to rule out.

    • Check temps and fan speeds (make sure nothing is overheating re: hwinfo)
    • Check the Event Log and Event History (look for causes of the freeze, likely won't find any, but look)
    • Run task manager open on the performance tab and open the resource monitor. (Sort to items in the Resource Monitor by the CPU column to you can see what was running when the system freezes.)
    • Run MemCheck (just to make sure, especially if you are building a new machine the foundation is solid)
    • Drivers being correct and up-to-date. (yeah we probably all did that first)
    • Running the sfc scan (just to make sure none of the freezes corrupted or damaged anything)
    • Running CheckDSK scan (to ensure non of the freezes corrupted or damaged any files.)
    • Set the PSIe Link Mode to off if applicable (might need/want it on laptop, not much use on a desktop).
    • UNpark the CPU's (again, might not want to on Laptop, but might help with troubleshooting)
    • Disable C-States.. (short version, disables the ability of the PC to underClock itself.) This was the winner for me.
I see people are still reporting this issue or versions of it. I have helped quite a few people since going through my ordeal. FWIW since the above fix (last step, DISABLE C-States) I have had ZERO issues. The Anniversary update went fine as well.

Here are some additional settings that I have used to eliminate some of the problems... these apply mostly to PC's

    Under Advanced Power Settings
(settings / power & sleep / additional power settings / change plan settings / change advanced power settings)

+ Wireless Adapter Setting set to Maximum Performance (only if you are using wireless)
+ Sleep set Allow Hybrid Sleep to OFF
+ USB Settings set USB selective suspend setting to DISABLED
+ PCI Express set Link State Power Management to Moderate (I believe this can be OFF or Maximum depending on if you have PCI devices. I don't, and my system works, so I left this at the default, but it might be something to look at if you have PCI devices.)
+ Processor power Management set both Minimum and Maximum processor state to 100% and set cooling policy Active. ( Especially on a PC, why would one ever not want to run their CPU at 100%, FWIW, I set my laptop this way as well, as I rarely am on battery for longer than a few hours)

    Then under Device Manager
    • Under the Power Management tab of the Keyboard and Mouse Properties screen, ensure ONLY the "Allow this device to wake the computer" is checked.
    • Under Universal Serial Bus controllers ensure the Power Management tab of all of the USB Root Hub items and USB Root Hub (xHCI) items have NOTHING checked. The default is "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Not even sure why you would want to do that on a laptop, but certainly no reason on a desktop. Make sure it's unchecked.

The usual disclaimers apply... but so far I and all of the people I have helped, have been FREEZE free and NOT-ABLE-TO-WAKE-IT-UP free.

    Good luck out there.

Thanks a lot for these tips.
I had no problem locating the settings you listed for Advanced Power Settings, but had no luck finding the 2 settings you listed under Device Manager.

Sorry for the hassle, but could you post a ss of it?

    Thanks regardless!

A clean boot was the first thing I tried, the freezes were even happening with just windows installed & then getting updates. I spent the early hours this morning doing another clean install just to have the same freezes. Installing the November update build works fine with no freezes at all. I also seem to recall the first win 10 RTM release had freezing issues as well.

I installed Windows 10 around September or October. I'm pretty sure I started getting freezing issues around the turn of the year. And had been experiencing them up until a month ago.

In short, I'm pretty sure I experienced no freezes in November.

    Hi,

I also have had this problem for some time and it was becoming worse, with the system freezing several times a day.

I was convinced that it was graphics related so I bought a graphics card, assuming that there was a problem with the motherboard. That partially worked in that the frequency of freezes reduced to one freeze every couple of days. However, the problem was still there.

I did a Google search for Windows 10 freezes and found the following Youtube video:-
Windows 10 Freezing Issue Solution - YouTube

Guess what? It seems to have worked. The computer has now been on continuously for 7 days and not a single freeze. Everything graphics related also seems to work better although that could just be my relief that I have corrected the problem.

I know that this thread predates AU and so encompasses many other kinds of freezes, but for those with the freeze issue that has been prevalent in AU, MS claims that they have the fix out in the latest CU (14393.105). See the top two posts here:
