Windows 10 freezes randomly

I can confirm that I have the freezing again and removing Chrome dit NOT solve the issue. Back to the drawing board it seems.

So I started having this problem just recently. Like many of you I suspected the video card until it froze up in safe mode (w/networking) on a fresh install of Windows 10. I managed to solve it by forgoing the default driver that windows installs for my onboard network adapter. Mine happens to be a Realtek 8111D Gigabit Ethernet. I checked the realtek site, and there was an update issued March 23, 2016. I installed it and it alleviated my problems with the computer hanging. There are many realtek adapters covered by this driver, maybe yours?

Thanks for this! How long have you been without the issue after the update? Anyway I'll try the drivers later today!

Unfortunately, long enough to think I had it fixed. Currently running a memtest from a linux distro to see if that's the problem. Really discouraging and disappointing on this one guys.

Sad to hear. Was looking forward to it. Someone mentioned in the thread that the DVD-player caused issues to their system. I also noticed yesterday that before a crash Windows tried to update the DVD-drivers. I removed it from the System, but still had a crash. Very close of returning the computer to the dealer. After work I have better things to do than debug 2k€ PC :)

As a pc technician and programer the last 20 years I feel very fustrated about this thing. Fixing a lot of pc's every day and this problem persists only on my personal comuter at home...
I have tried everything, clean formats of Windows 10, changed CPU,PSU,GPU,RAM, hard disks, drivers for everything, every kind of windows settings mentioned on the internet and the problem does not go away. The only thing that I havent changed is the mobo but I don't thing its faulty because other OS's I use never freeze the system.
I have the classic 2-3 second freeze which comes with a black screen, cpu fans rotating a bit faster and keyboard unresponsive and always have to hard reset the pc to reboot. Hope we will be able to combine our knowledge and find what causes this problem. I like Windows 10 however (I use it at my laptop with no problems).

My rig is quite old now but was completely stable under Windows 8.1 and until a couple of weeks ago, I'd got it stable under 10 too. In general, since upgrading to Win 10 Pro 64 bit, I've experienced a succession of stability problems, some of which are of the sudden total freeze type to which this thread refers. Problems started happening again just recently to which there was no recourse except to hard restart.

My system has two nVidia GTX280 cards and a multi monitor setup. Issues with and the updating of nVidia drivers has been the cause of delight and despair in equal measure. It wasn't until version 341.85 (for my particular cards) came out that I finally got my system stable again. Anyhow, recently there was an update release (version 341.95) that installed itself courtesy of the not very controllable Windows 10 updating regime. It came in with a load of other updates. Suddenly, my system was freezing up again, as in everything would suddenly stop (including the clock) but interestingly, any audio playing at the time continued. No warning and no errors.

As I'd experienced so many issues with the nVidia drivers in the past, my instinctive reaction was to look there first. Sure enough, a thorough safe mode uninstall then re-installation of the previous version drivers and the problem was fixed ........ until the nVidia driver updated itself again via Windows update. Grrrr!

Once again, Tenforums to the rescue. I found the thread Windows Updates - Hide or Show in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums relating to the tool that Microsoft had (quietly?) released called "wushowhide.diagcab" that allows you to temporarily stop selected updates from installing, i.e. like the hide / unhide feature in previous Windows versions.

Hooray! For the time being at least, I have a stable system again, albeit with technically an outdated video driver. I know that there are a miriad of driver related issues that seem to trip up Windows 10 quite easily but this was my latest experience and it may help somebody else to know what I did to fix it ...... this time anyway.

Changed the mobo and finally no problems. Actually replacing the motherboard means that its a new pc (the mobo is a different model) so its not a fix. All the other parts CPU,PSU,GPU,RAM, hard disks are the same. Even Win10 booted from the disk I used to have with the other mobo and runs perfectly (updated drivers automaticaly from update). Wanted to share it with you just in case it helps for any solution.

Never got it to work. Replaced the machine with a new one with identical specs. Everything working so far. Suspect faulty HDD. Hopefully you others have better luck!

Mine finally fixed after manual install of win 7 driver for amd ahci .No more freezing in AHCI mode :)
