I have just built my pc. No refurbished pieces or anything and I know I hooked everything up correctly. Things work great on it but suddenly it hangs for no reason. I have to restart it again. I poured a ton of effort into this computer it's a shame windows 10 doesn't work very well...

swyatt2170, we are not alone! i have also an asus z170 board but a skylake i5, and many people out there have problems too. regardeless of the os or cpu-type. linux and osx users have this problem too. i switched between w10 and w8.1 and still got freezes in both os.

since skylake was released many people wrote about freezes in many it-related forums so far.

and some people of the mersenne-forum, the founder of prime95 can force and reproduce this freeze on all skylake platforms with special calculation settings of prime95. they talked with the support of intel and they will working on this case now.

the "corrupt" opencl.dll isn't the or a problem, it's cause nvidia overwrites the lib with his own from the driver-package. so the hash differs with the microsoft one and dism/sfc cries about.

btw, can you tell me the clock of your ram, and do (can?) you use xmp?

Hopefully Intel and Asus are on the case then. It is 3000Mhz RAM and I have set the XMP to use the "Profile #1" setting (or something like that) in the BIOS in order to get the true clock speed. I have had freezes in the early days though when I set everything to default/stock just to be sure that it wasn't the overclock that causes the issue.

I am presently running a 15% overclock which the board itself has set based on the onboard switches for TPU (as I have a GTX100i AIO CPU cooler). Again, the freezes have occurred regardless of whether I am running an OC or not.

Edit: I have raised a support request with Asus as well, describing the issue and pointing them to this forum/topic.

Just received the following response to my case raised with Asus. In fairness, they responded quickly, and their suggestions of fast boot and fast startup disabling I don't believe is going to help much having already tried tweaking these settings earlier in the process.

And I don't have an earlier version of Windows to try as I've moved from Mac so I guess I'll wait and see what updates come out of Asus and Intel over the coming weeks and months. Hopefully the issue will be identified and resolved quickly.

    Dear Steven,

My name is Paul and I will try my best to assist you with this issue.
Please feel free to rate our service according to the solution provided in the questionnaire that will be sent to you shortly after our reply to your inquiry.

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your Z170-DELUXE.

Please try disabling the Fast Startup feature from Windows 10 and also Fast Boot from BIOS.

However this may be an inherent issue from the new Skylake technology which is still being worked on by Intel.

Considering all the troubleshooting steps you have already done I would recommend testing an older OS for now. The freezes may not occur or may not be as often in an older OS.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us.

    Best Regards,

    Paul

thanks for your reply! and like i said before, an older os won't change anything. got freezes on 10 and 8.1. and on other forums they also got problems under 7 and linux. so this isn't primary os related.

something with oc was also one of my ideas, but like u said, oc'd or not, it changed nothing.

@Saltgoat what kind of cpu and board do u have?

Hi! I have been getting these random freezes a couple of times now which locks up the entire system and forces me to do a hard restart
Same thing happens to me, especially when using a Browser, doesn't matter which one. How much RAM you got, I only have 2GB. Sometime today I will have 4, I ordered two DDR2 sticks 2GB each. I think this is my problem, windows 7 ran well with only 2GB, but 10 needs more.

    16Gb DDR4 (2x8) & M.2 drive

I'm only using Chrome - haven't tried Edge

I have not tried installing Acronis yet - I've seen some comments that suggest that it might contribute...

Ah then you won't be having the same problem as I did, unless it is a glitch in Chrome. In fact I removed Chrome because it kept locking me up more than the other Browsers.

I don't think I can install more than 8gbs of Ram on either of my main PCs, they are both variations of ASUS M2N, but one of them was from an HP and it has a proprietary Bios. It's actually a faster board than my regular M2N, and I've got it overclocked by 7%. I use that system to watch movies, I use this one to pay bills and to run media servers.

    What worked for me.

I thought i would just reply with what worked for me as i've tried quite a few things on this forum and others but unfortunately none worked for me
my computer is pretty old, it was built by a friend ages ago and im using Nvidia GT 9800.

I updated from windows 7 to 10 awhile ago, since the update i had problems.. it would freeze, mainly when playing games though and it would sometimes get the blue screen mentioning (nvlddmkm.sys) i tried lots of things, updating graphics card, clean install of windows 10 etc etc, it only happened every so often, so although it was annoying i didn't bother too much.

few days ago i seen there was a new windows update and a nvidia update, i thought that may be the fix so i updated them both.. this made things 100 times worse.
now my pc would freeze every 10 minutes, even simply trying to go on google, when it freezed i could move my mouse and even click on some things but i couldn't close the programme (wether it firefox or my game) which was the culprit of the freeze and my cpu would go really high. Task manager didn't work so i had to manual turn the pc off

i tried loads of things that i had seen work for other people such as: changing the path of something(can't really remember what it was but it worked for someone else), turned of automatic updates, completly deleting all nvidia off my computer and installing them again and i tried few other bits but nothing worked.

the only problem i had was when i was trying to manually install Nvidia driver it would fail the install so i had too install it through the Nvidia experience, it did install the latest one but still had problems.

    What worked for me
What fixed my freezing was installing the driver manually, obviously it wasn't letting me though as it always failed, so when opening the installer i choose Advance install rather than express and i also checked the 'clean install' button at the bottom so nvidia could install it from fresh., it deleted everything fine but failed again at installing them.. i tried the install again without ticking 'clean install' and it finally didn't fail.

It has been 2 days now and not 1 freeze and i have played games and done multiple things.

Its the exact same driver version that i had previously so i'm not sure if it was the driver or that i had done the clean install.. i did use guru driver uninstaller before but maybe the nvidia uninstaller took something off that that had missed, i'm not sure but it worked.

so if anyone has installed their driver through the experience then i would suggest trying it through manual install and choose advance and clicking clean install
