il be quite honest i have no freaking idea... i only have 1 mass external storage and when i plug that in. it comes up as Seagate Expansion Storage... when i checked the properties before removing the *Mass storage device*

most of the properties list such as name / what it belonged to etc. showed as unavailable.

That icon in notification area as you know enables you also to safely remove a device, external. Like me with media card reader, so i can remove my card safely without corrupting data or causing errors to drive. Reasons for this icon be there, why i asked what device was to be sure of reasons for it to be there. Otherwise i believe if have no devices like this, will not have this icon.

ive plugged my External storage HD in twice now, and it still shows!

i dont think ive broken anything... i just did not want that icon to be on my taskbar 24/7

obviously it will appear whenever you connect a device.. as it gives you the option to safely save your progress and disconnect the device without any worries of data loss.

O.k. now have an external device, thought before you did not, but said were not sure what mass storage device was and removed it. As said mine started showing when i installed a card reader, if plug in an external device will show up. Why are you obsessed with removing it, not going to give you more memory ?

You can either make it show on taskbar or hide in when active.

i think your starting to take a completely different course from what i was discussing on this thread...

its the fact that the icon *NEVER* went away... i.. like many here.. like everything clean and organized.. i dont want it showing if it has no purpose and just taking space on my taskbar... i right click *shown by the image provided on the threads OP* and comes up with no options besides taking me to devices and printers... so what use do i have for it being on my taskbar...

if nothing is being used and there is nothing to safely eject why is it still there ? hence the hole point of the thread was finding help on removing it from taskbar.

and it seems you have skipped another one of my responses to another user! you cant hide taskbar icons if you all ready have it set to "Show all icons"...

i would have thought you would have gotten this by now, but it appears im wrong!

Hard for me to tell you since i have a media card reader internal, so i can not find any other way to completely remove this icon myself to even show you without removing my internal card to see if it goes away, all i know is either it can be caused by another device on your system making it appear is my best guess.

Yes, you can make it show or you can hide it behind arrow on notification area, all the settings i find in Windows to do anything with notification icons, always been that way even in Windows 8.1.Regardless want it removed completely as i said do not know a way something else on your system in devices and printers may be keeping it there.

Now maybe some registry change can do it, not familiar thought with a way. I get what you mean by something being there that has no use ,but you are not even positive about that yes to say. Only one other person who has responded, want to wait and see if anybody else knows more, but you already marked it as solved.
