May 2018 W10 update, desktop will not boot

my desktop is a Gateway, running an I5 processor. 8 g ram 500g HD.
no problems until today, after running the latest microsoft update.
before update, I did a system restore; but did not make backup *bad move.

Update seemed to have installed (or maybe it did not). No error message.
After an hour, when I checked on the progress, I was asked to select language.
I did that.
Next screen, 1st option was to "continue to rollback." If I selected that, computer went to restart and came back to same screen.
Screen also had system restore, system recover options.
Restore failed, said nothing to restore--although I had made a restore point prior to installing the update.
System recover/fix said it could not do it.
Nothing got me to a boot.
I could get to command prompt but could not access any of the HD files--no authentication.
BIOS asks me to select to boot from the Microsoft Boot Manager or from the HD.
Neither option had any effect.
I tried from the command prompt to get to a safe boot but that did not work either.
I was able to see Windows.old file still in the directory but it has today's date. And "rollback" fto earlier version failed, with unable to do.

This update has obliterated my Windows10.
Ideas on how to roll back? command prompt seems to be the only thing working.

Hi sunslight and welcome to Tenforums.
I would, right now, before doing anything else, download Kyhi's custom recovery media, and grab your data off the drive and back it up.

I'm guessing you're looking at a complete reinstall of Windows, as you have no image to restore.

Others may have some things for you to try first, so please get your data backed up. And please fill out your system specs as best as possible - it helps us help you.

Early this morning the OS stopped showing the Advanced restore options screen. I no longer have access to that area, nor a command prompt. startup now shows the normal normal log in screen. I am able to log in but after several minutes an error message pops up: ...\system32\config\systemfile\desktop is unavailable. The only icon on the black screen is a recycle bin. There are a few labels at the bottom of the screen. I can get to task view and see systems that are running and access networking trouble shooting commands. The task view works, networking says network is fine. Control alt delete brings up options to restart/shutdown. But that's about all the control I have. Are there any hot key commands I can try? This is the first time an MS update has blown away my system. The CPU is an Intel I5-3330.

You don't have a friend's computer you can use to download the recovery media?

Since you're "in" to a desktop (barely), let's try making a new, local, admin-level user account - use the command line option #6 (Ctrl+Alt+Del>Task Manager; Run New Task from Task Manager: cmd)
Add Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
Then logoff the messed up user account and log into the new one; let it create the desktop, and see if it's looking normal.
