    desktop files/folders don't automatically appear anymore

    The thread title says it all. In order to get my desktop files and folders to appear I have to right click and go to View. Most of the time the files/folders will then appear. Sometimes I have to also go down to "Show desktop icons" before they appear. But previously they have always appeared automatically when I boot my computer.

    Does anyone know why this new development and if it can be fixed?

    Nikilet,

    The more common remedy is to right-click then select Refresh.

    I also suffer from this from time to time and have never found a solution.
    • I did search for solutions at first and I wasted whole days of my life following through steps that sometimes had an effect for as long as half an hour.
    • There is no remedy because there is no diagnosis.
    • Other than rebooting & hoping, I do not bother doing anything about it any more.

    The old Windows 7 fix for this may still work, it's worth a try. Save the following as a .reg file and merge into your registry.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{BDEADE7F-C265-11D0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\Instance]
    "dontrefresh"=dword:00000000
    But unfortunately it's a common long-term problem with Windows which can apparently have multiple causes, and there's no guarantee you'll find a fix that works for you.

    Thanks for your responses. If there isn't a sure fix for it, I guess I can live with it. Just a nuisance.
