The start menu search seems strange. Some items are searchable, others are not. They show up in "all apps", but not when I search after them. For example the Office applications don't show up in the search.

I'm trying to understand what you are doing, please humor me.

You had win 7, then you did an upgrade to 10 from within 7, correct ?
Then did you do a clean install of 10 after ?
    You got it exactly right.
I'm not a big fan of upgraded OS, so i did a clean install after the upgrade.
So the OS and the programs are ALL a clean install

    Yes everything is clean installed
In other words you installed M$ office from disk? Or did you just copy the files from programs back to your new install?

From disk, theres nothing wierd about the installation... efter the upgrade i deleted all disk partitions and did a clean install.
Nothing is from another install, everything is clean

If I type out in search it finds outlook for me. I have office 2013 installed. its listed as Microsoft office 2013 in the Start Menu. I have to click the down arrow to see the list of all installed programs like Word and Outlook etc. Mine was already installed before I upgraded to Windows 10.

After you did the upgrade from 7 to 10 was it activated before you did the clean install ?

Then, after you did the clean install of 10 was it activated also ?

It sounds like your registry is corrupt or bad that is where windows knows where your programs are and you are not getting that.
