This was the download of the upgrade. It shutdown and rebooted. Any suggestions for black screen when no cursor ever appears. Have no idea what to do when there is nothing on my screen to use. How long could I expect to wait for cursor to appear?

    Hi,

I just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my laptop (DELL Inspiron 15R) The installation went fine. The first problem I had was when Windows 10 asked for my password. I entered my password, the same I had since I got my laptop (2012). Windows refused it. I entered my password again. It worked. I saw a pretty nice picture of a place somewhere on the planet (it was something like a beach seen through a hole in a rock) then the screen went black with a white cursor. I waited, turned off my laptop then turned it on. Every time I do this, I see the Dell logo (setup/boot options) then a blue window in the middle of my screen and finally a black screen with the white cursor (the touchpad works). I have seen many different solutions on this post (update Dell Bios, extra monitor, upgrade graphics card [AMD Radeon HD 7730M], create a new user with administrator, etc.) but I wonder which one is right for me.

Okay if you have just upgraded to windows 10 and are sitting at a black screen for way too long here's the problem and how to fix it.

If you have an on board Intel graphics controller as well as an add on graphics card, windows thinks you have one more monitor connected than you actually have. so when windows loads its outputting the video signal to a bogus monitor.

    How to fix this
firstly wait long enough so the mouse cursor to appear when you move the mouse.
(blank screen with a white mouse cursor)

Then press the space-bar and enter your login password or pin (yes your doing this blind)

You should now be logged into windows
if the desktop dose not appear after 30 seconds then press WindowsKey-P down arrow twice and enter.

    I hope this helps
Nothing is working for me I have a black screen on my laptop but I'm been trying to fix it for weeks and nothing has worked

Hey guys, I don't know if this will fix your issue but it fixed mine. Check your BIOS, and update it! My issue was not a driver issue but actually a BIOS issue all along. I spent ages trying to replace the drivers when that was not the problem. As it turns out, my BIOS version was dated at 2011, checking the intel website for a BIOS update for my laptop and installing it solved this issue. Check your BIOS. I hope this helps. :P

Morning Everyone. I found a fix on another website. You need to go into the settings for the brightness of your laptop screen. For whatever reason, windows 10 has reversed the settings. If you turn the screen settings to 0 on both battery and power, there is no longer a problem. Probably a glitch in the windows 10 environment and the video cards and drivers. Hopefully, Microsoft will be able to work out this bug.

I have a dell inspiron n4050 which I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 a week ago. It worked properly a couple of days and suddenly when it started showing blue screen with bad_system_config_info. I restarted my laptop but it didn't work and I tried restore point recovery, that too didn't work. Now it has got worsen, showing black screen on start up and nothing else. I have run BIOS and says everything is just fine. I can't get safe mode. Please anyone who knows how to solve the issue, i need your help.

    What finally worked for me...

None of this worked for me. I couldn't even boot to Safe Mode; I got the same black screen.

I was finally able to log onto Windows 10 by booting to a command line, creating a new account, and using that. So I suspect that something in my previous account—e.g. the graphics options I'd chosen, or some of the startup tasks I'd added—are conflicting with Win 10 and preventing the account from running.

I'm now trying to figure out how to use the new account to change my previous account's settings, in case that'll fix it. It would be a lot easier than starting over.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd contribute this solution in case anyone else found it helpful. I've included step-by-step details of what I've described in the forum topic I've started here: "Black screen after logon fixed, sort of, but..."
