    In-Place Upgrade

The market will cast it's vote just as it did with 8/8.1 or any other OS for that matter. Yes, MS took a step back, saw the problem of "unfamiliararity" and "learning curve" with 8/8.1, slapped training wheels on it, and called it 10.
I'd say that MS fixed the idiotic tablet "features" that made the W8 series so annoying for desktop users (e.g. killed the Charms bar)
To be fair, W8.1 wasn't as annoying as W8.

Last, but not least, and more so to answer your first point of success of 10, it seems to be off to a good start. Not much on the Net yet, but I found this.

Windows 10s usage share continues climb | Computerworld

This graph is taken from that article and I quote.
As I expected, W10 does seem to be slaughtering W8's adoption rate.

I suspect that the in-place upgrade from W7 (via Windows Update) may be responsible for that.

They fixed the "idiotic tablet features" alright. They separated it with a "Tablet mode" for all that want to use that feature. Those that don't basically use the old tech. More versatile of an OS I would say, yes?

Charms still remain within most WinRT Store apps via the upper apps bar such as in this very same Edge app I'm using, save printing and projection here for some reason, otherwise Charms is very much alive. (See snip below) It's just presented in a different way. Please take notice of the Share icon on the bar. Probably the most useful item of Charms. Have you tried it? IMO very useful.

If your speaking of the general 8/8.1 Start screen Charms bar, then yes, they changed it over to separate apps such as the Settings app and most other functions ported onto the "most cherished" Start menu.

Or could it be that users want to upgrade to the latest cutting-edge tech that they read or hear is much like 7? After all, the press and IT Pros absolutely crucified 8/8.1 into almost nonexistence.

True story and I kid you not. This past Saturday my oldest daughter with her new Android phone and her (I don't remember the OEM > having a senior moment) laptop with W7 came to me with her problem that the laptop didn't recognize the Android for to be able to upload her pics from her phone. The first thing I did was to run a command line in Command Prompt in which it reported it fixed the USB issue. No go when connecting the phone again. I then uninstalled all the USB controllers via Task Manager and rebooted so to refresh them. Still a no go. I told her that I could USB it to my PC, upload the pics, then stick them on a thumb drive, and then upload onto her lappy > All 2,000 + pics! That would have taken some time as you know. I explained that W7 might not be able to recognize her new phone for some reason for 7 is older tech. Seems to me 7 simply didn't have a driver for her phone's drive.

She knows all about my techie head and have been testing 10. I explained to her that 10 has been released to the public and she was eligible for the upgrade. I also told that I know for certain that 10 will indeed recognize the newer phone. First thing out of her mouth and I quote word for word > "Of course I want to get the latest and best". I then proceeded to upgrade and the next day she came and we succeeded in uploading all her pics.

Basically, people are idiots, need somebody to make their minds about everything. That's where crusaders come in. They will tell you what to do and think. They will wake you up at 6AM Sunday morning and tell you everything you didn't want to know about Bible and what you should take out of contest to suit their thinking. Crusaders will tell which books to read and that a book is smut even without reading it, (same about movies). See where this is going ?
Than there are Nannies, they know exactly what you need/not, should/not, do/not, just let them run your life and you are going to live a life of bliss.
Commercials and advertisements will tel you that if you don't use Old Spice, you're not a real man but a sissy and no woman will get in the same train with you. Use a wrong detergent and you are lousy homemaker and your family will fall apart or you'll have a ring around collar at best.
If everything else fails statistic experts come in. They will tell you that 69,362% of people do/don't like a specific movie, book, car or whatever and according to that you have to act. God/Gods forbid you get out of that box, you are doomed.
I could go on and on with examples of forced thinking, everybody and his brother (including governments and organized religion) have "My way or highway" attitude.
Answering questions before they are asked takes a high part in my "Dirty Book". So called "Experts" and crusader do that invariably and a "Why" most of the time ends with "Just because", "because I/many think so".
"You are not capable of doing that, so don't try", gets to me every time. Crusaders are experts in that field, they can get into your soul at any distance and will try to bamboozle you into anything.
Nuts I say to all of that, let live ind die, help if you can and are asked for, but pushing your way is for patsies and willing victims and I won't have a part of it.

I was hoping for a "reduction" with the bells and whistles when I installed W10 yesterday. It saddens me that Microsoft did not listen to people about the traditional Start Menu--or at least, give the PC user the ability to change the Start Menu to look and behave exactly like Windows XP, Vista and 7.
The old style Start Menu has no place in 2015, nor a modern OS such as Windows 10. The new Start Menu is perfect. I don't understand why people want to operate their PC like it's still the mid 1990's. Microsoft made the correct decision.

Yes. My post is right below yours, so there is no point in quoting.

    Edit:
I think the new Start Menu is quite good but I would't call it perfect. There's plenty of room for improvement, such as:
    • Pinning frequently-used apps to the list
    • Resizing tile areas (choosing number of tiles in a row)
    • Enabling/disabling alphabet indexing for apps (per desktop/tablet mode)

    YMMV

The Start Screen in Windows 8/8.1 showed everyone the direction Microsoft & the industry was going. It could be argued that the vision they had for Windows 8 was about 3 years too early and executed badly by 'forcing' touch-centric options on users who had a keyboard & mouse. Microsoft realised they got it badly wrong with Windows 8 and corrected some of their mistakes with 8.1. The Start button was back but the Start Screen wasn't for everyone, nor was the UX.

With Windows 10 they have the perfect balance. Users don't need to drill through menus and sub menus to reach what they are looking for. Everything can be pinned/launched from the Start Menu, a Start Menu that doesn't full full screen (by default) and dominate your desktop! That was annoying. That was what Microsoft got badly wrong with 8/8.1. The Start Screen wasn't a bad idea in Windows 8, it was just executed badly. It's now fixed. Everything with the Windows 10 Start Menu is fixed! I love it.

Testers begged MS to do that with W8, but MS refused.
IMO, If they had done that there would have been a lot less "whining" about the W8 series.

I mean the pop-out sidebar that invariably appeared whenever you tried to close a desktop window, but wouldn't appear when you deliberately tried to invoke it.
I'm not sure what your screenshot is showing (other than Edge).

I tested the W8 series previews (DP, CP, RP, Ent) and decided that I wasn't going to pay money to use something that annoying.
I can download any number of annoying Linux Distros for free (specifically the GUIs e.g. GNOME3 & Unity).

As you can probably guess I've never used "Share".
Just like I never use the "email this to someone" in browser context menus

It's still a lot easier to click on an "Upgrade to W10" pop-up, than to go down to the shop and buy an install disc (or new machine).

It can't be that people want new tech.
After all, "people hate change" was the excuse for the low adoption rate of the W8 series.

Given the adoption rate, most of the testers hated it too (not only the press and IT Pros).

During the previews, MS was told in no uncertain terms that they were "barking up the wrong tree".

The other main screw up was that MS didn't include a "killer" Metro App (for free) in the W8 series (e.g. pay Adobe for a Metro Photoshop App or include a Metro Word App).
