Cannot upgrade Win 10 - it thinks my SDD is USB

    Et al,

I replaced my HDD with a SDD about a year ago, so far so good. But, recently I cannot upgrade Win 10 to the latest version because it (WIN) thinks my SDD is a USB drive. The current drive was cloned from a HDD and when I went back to it, WIN would not allow me to upgrade WIN versions. I assume my issue may be chip related or driver. While I am able to function fully under the current version WIN will not allow me to update.

Also, if anyone has a driver for dell e6510:

    USB or removable?

If it's removable, there could be a switch in the BIOS settings (for SATA devices) to turn that off. I'm not hopeful, because it's a) a laptop and b) a Dell (which usually means limited BIOS settings are available).

Good luck. I see that it's a fairly old laptop (latest BIOS release, 2003).

Please post a Disk Management screen shot of the SSD.

Thanks! Next, open an Admin Command Prompt and type the following:

Bcdedit > c:\bigtime.txt (and press Enter)

You can open c:\bigtime.txt with Notepad, and Copy/Paste the contents here.

Backup the system with Macrium Reflect and create a Rescue Disk. Verify you can boot to the rescue disk and that you are able to see the backup file you created and view its contents with the rescue disk.

The Active flag for the first partition (E) is wrong and that's likely what Windows is tripping over. Fixing it is another problem.

    Kludge,

Thanks for responding. Windows, says access is denied for Bcdedit > c:\bigtime.txt. Would it be prudent to backup all files, create rescue disk, delete all partitions and start over? I'm not sure how to remove the active flag under the first partition.

For the driver, go to http://support.dell.com and put your Service Tag number in the box to get a list of drivers available for downloading then install. The Service Tag is on a label somewhere on the computer or on Notebooks maybe inside the battery compartment. I've had success in Upgrading 4 Dell Latitude E6410 Notebooks from Win7 to Win10.

YES, it would be prudent, but it may not be necessary if a fix is found.

Hey brother. I've just read your post. I'm not as savvy as I'd like. How do you install the:
Add a new "Multi String Value" called "TreatAsInternalPort" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\Parameters\Device with the values "0|1|2|3|4|5|
