I have thus far been able to get my 4870 scanner working. I have tried the EPSON recommended drivers for Win10 and several versions of Vuescan. The drivers seem to install OK but as soon as the install completes an error message appears stating that there is no scanner attached. If anyone has had a similar problem and gotten it resolved I'd sure like to know how you did it...

To determine plug and play device detection, you need start in Device Manager
> Do you see Device Manager refresh as you plug/unplug the scanner from the port? (Of course, scanner should also be turned on)
> When plugged in the device should appear under Imaging Devices or an Other Device category. Do you see a device appear in either when the usb cord is plugged into the port?
Check if your Windows Image Acquisition service is set to Automatic start
Good news is Windows detects the hardware.
Bad news is when Windows goes searching on its own, it doesn't find what it thinks is a compatible driver. (That's why it appears in Device Manager as an "Other Device")
Hopefully good news. I found this old thread How to Install Old Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner in Windows 10. Good news is the driver file Epson gives for your 4870 is the same the one for the 1200. So try those same instructions (you can skip download/install part as you've already installed the file)
Well, I religiously followed the instructions - several times - and the drivers never installed. I then tried several variations on the theme but still no joy.
There must be something basic wrong but I haven't been able to figure it out.
I got my ASUS D2X sound card installed without a hiccup but I may have met my Waterloo with the 4870.
I do appreciate the help...
Does the driver file epson12180.exe run OK and does the unzipped setup.exe file run and install the driver? You could try running the installer as an administrator and in Windows 7 compatibility mode since it's quite old. Also check you are plugging the scanner directly into the PC and not via a hub. Check connecting too via different USB ports in case you have a hardware issue.
I believe by default Epson unzips into folder C:\Epson. Won't hurt to unzip into that folder again.
Use DevMgr to Update Driver again->"Browse my Computer". This time Browse to the C:\Epson folder. Make sure "include Subfolders" is checked. Click next. Any better luck?
