When plugging my usb xbox360 controller in it registers as headphones

Hello. I recently ran into a problem, all of a sudden when plugging my controller into the usb the sound stopped coming out of my speakers. I had thought maybe it was just an error or something so I restarted and checked my drivers, they were all updated. so then I noticed that my taskbar was registering that I had headphones plugged in, when I didn't. so I unplugged the controller from the usb and the sound came back to my laptop. I uninstalled the controller drivers and figured they would re-install and the problem would be solved. ( I also checked to see if it was the usb in my laptop that was faulty and I can still connect a mouse or ps3 controller just fine) the problem still persists and I'm not sure what else to try.
