    USB ports not working

My desktop was originally windows 8 and I had no problems then the update to 8.1 downloaded automatically and the problems started. Just before the cut of date I upgraded to windows 10.
My desktop has 2 USB 3 ports and 5 USB 2 ports. After the 8.1 update both USB 3 ports and 4 USB 2 ports stopped working but sometimes 1 of the USB 3 ports works for a short period of time.
I recently updated all my drivers and a pop up message appeared saying that there was a power surge to my USB ports and my pc does not recognise them.
Has any forum member had the same problem if so how did you resolve? or does any member know how to solve this issue as I cannot connect my printer, card reader external back-up HDD and other periferals that I use.
Thank you to anyone who can assist me.

Hi, the power surge means your USB port can't provide enough power to your device.
Either use a different port or provide power externally, if supported by the device, or suspect the device.

    Read these carefully, follow suggestions.

It may be you have a MOBO fault.

Try uninstalling your USB hubs in Device Manager, deleting the drivers.
    Restart and retry a device.

Also try contacting PC Specialists- they take enquiries seriously (my laptop is from them).

    Hi there
    @pja184

In this situation I'd go back to to ist engineering principles. Go back to last known working system and diagnose from there as follows :

    1) take backup of current system.
    2) Restore Old system -- hopefully you've got a backup -- but if you haven't just basic install Old system.
    3) see if USB etc working correctly.

    4) If they are still broken you've got a defective Mobo or defective devices -- note even 1 defective device can hose the rest up so check each device singly and in each USB slot.

    5) If it's all OK restore the W10 system.
    6) If USB still not working on W10 after OK on W8/W8.1 check settings in BIOS for USB and check all drivers available.
    7) If STILL not working - revert back to previous OS until someone comes up with more suggestions etc. For example perform the upgrade again or completely CLEAN install W10. Your activation will still be valid.

Note though ALWAYS before upgrading etc take BACKUPS before and after upgrade process.

If you haven't a decent backup program Free Macrium is good, quick, Free (of course) and reliable. Used by huge numbers of people on this board and can also be booted in stand alone mode for "Bare Metal recovery".

    Macrium Reflect Free

Thank you Dalchina for your suggestions did everything as outlined but it had no effect what-so-ever, still only got one USB port working out of 7 working.
Jimbo45 again thank you for your suggestions ad it looks as if there are some defective parts in my All-in-One desktop and it needs an engineer to open it up and strip it down and replace the defective parts. Nobody is prepared to even give me a ball park figure to do this so not sure if I should pay to have this done or just dump it and get a new desktop. If I do get a new machine it will certainly not be from PC Specialists.
However if anyone still has any possible suggestions that might solve my USB problem please let me know.

Hi, try booting your PC from the downloadable boot disk (use a DVD, not a CD- or flash drive) at the top of the Software and Apps section.

That will completely separate the issue from your current Windows installation, and if you still have problems, would indicate it's h/w not s/w.
