    Windows Update has become a nusiance KB3194496


    A week ago mine through automatic WU installed Windows 10 version 1607.
    Soon after on my desktop sound failed.
    I have Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme music card. In the device manager the driver detail was showing as 6.0.1.1373 of 03/06/2009.
    I uninstalled that and updated to 6.0.230.4 of 28/02/2004 and sound started to work.

    This morning (2nd Oct 2016) the Automatic WU presented my desktop with a cumulative update for Windows 10 V1607 for x64 based system -KB3194496.
    As soon as the update was complete my Creative sound system failed. The driver details this time remained as the one I updated a week ago.
    I have to uninstall this driver and restarted the desktop computer. On restarting device manager opened and installed something to effect "installing auxiliary ports". Soon after sound works...
    I am mystified as in the past 9 years no automatic WU ever mess up the sound system and in a week twice with automatic essential WUs I am having problem with sound, though I am up and running without loss of the sound through some work around.
    I wonder if the same problem will happen with the next WU!! Paranoid I am now...

    I wonder if any other have similar issues/experience?

    Yes, it is actually getting pretty common. Windows Updates are becoming less and less reliable.
    Consider yourself lucky, WU installed a bad driver and I got a black screen and could not boot.

    Is anyway to prevent from WU being installed?
    If that is possible, Would it be a save option do so even to stop installing the ones presented as "Essential"?

    I have disabled Windows update and driver updates via WU. I use Driver Easy Free to check for drivers.

    I am subscribed to email alerts about new updates

    Technical Security Notifications from Microsoft

    Once I receive an email alert, I check this forum and watch for a few days, if the update causes problems.
    If it is OK, I use Windows Update MiniTool to check for updates and then I hide or install them.



    Afterwards I use WC.bat to perform a cleanup to make sure, that the next update will work.
