Thanks for asking for clarification. Internal is Rosewill multi-card device. External is Lexar dual slot 3.0. The Lexar has been tested with several other computers and works on them.

I'm not as concerned with the internal as with the external. I use CF cards mostly and the internal one has bent pins so I was using the external before the upgrade to Win10. Now I use a USB 3.0 cable to transfer directly from the the camera.
how old is the Card Reader ? does it have the latest Firmware?
    this one?

Microsoft issued a tool to block a specific driver from reinstalling - might be worth a try.

king901: Unfortunately, I didn't do it, the guys I paid at the shop found it. It's above my pay grade. What they told me is that this 'diskpart' (I'm guessing it's something related to disk partition or its ilk) is the thing that automatically mounts disks and assigns drive letters. Its default is enabled but somehow, probably through one of those myriad upgrades, that it became rendered disabled. I guess the fix was easy but finding the problem was difficult. Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

Kbird: thanks for the links I will check them out when I get the rig back.

I have windows 10 pre-loaded to my computer, I updated my computer yesterday to Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update). it update no problem. well I tried plugging my usb WD my passport into my computer and now its not showing up at all. I've clicked on the folder to show hidden folders and that was a no go. I also went under device manger too see if it was not up to date, and it was up to date. would I have to go to the Western digital website to find the driver and load it back on there. Attachment 99181Attachment 99182 I have attached files to my post. an I also cant go back on the driver at all as well. is it something with Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update)

After AU only Microsoft Signed Drivers will load apparently, I would see if WD has new Drivers available yet.

The Drive should still be seen as a USB device though....

To check if Automount is still enable open a Admin Command Prompt and type diskpart to start the diskpart utility then use these commands.

    automount <enter>

if it's enable ...all good on that front.... if not....
enable the automount feature by typing:

    automount enable <enter>

Then check with the automount command again that it really is enabled....

To disable the automount feature for some reason you type: automount disable

Then type exit <enter> to leave the Diskpart utility

and close the Command prompt window.
