    SERIOUS PROBLEM: HDD Making Noise?

    Hi all,

I was just cleaning out my PC tower when I accidentally dropped my phone on the HDD that stores all my data... Now, 10 minutes later it's making this "wheezing" noise that I've never heard it make before.

Is there anything I can do to check if it has been damaged?

I already have HD Tune installed so it'd be great if I could do something with this to check.

    Thank you!

Hi, HD Tune, Health and Error Scan tabs.

Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) is the best I know.

Hope you've a backup or disk image- trying to back up by tapping your phone isn't likely to work

    Your reply is appreciated!

The HDD seems to have stopped making the noise now and it sounds normal.

However, Windows 10 has downloaded "Feature Update 1809" and I was about to restart my PC, but now that my phone has hit the HDD I don't know if this is a good time to do the Windows Feature Update 1809 or not???

No, not very good time for update. Check your HDD first with Hard Disk Sentinel and/or with a program for your disk. You can probably find one here:
Download Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

Ah, really? I thought updating Windows 10 now would be a good time because it'll sort out any problems with the HDD(if there are any problems)?

Update can't fix anything concerning HDD if it's in disrepair or physically hurt, it can only cause problems.

I understand that the Windows 10 software update won't fix a HDD hardware issue, but I thought restarting Windows 10 would be a positive thing as it may improve things?

It's more apt to make it worse than better, hope you have a full backup.

I read that the new Windows 10 1809 has a new backup feature?

I just did a "quick scan" using HD Tune and no errors were found.

Restarting or updating (refreshing)? It won't do any improvement, nor damage to your drive.

In your place... I would buy a new disk. Image it first on external drive and/or make a backup. All depending on importance of your data, of course. These technologies in hard drives are very sensitive and fine tuned to work flawlessly. Once behaving strangely, probability for something to goes wrong is simply too big, and it is simply not worth the risk.
