Possibly I'm just being an idiot and missing something obvious, not having had to mess with drivers manually much. But this doesn't work for me. I have downloaded the .cab file for the latest realtek drivers, but if I tell windows to search a specific location for this driver (program files\realtek\HDA) it thinks about it then decides I already have the best drivers. But the version of the driver is unchanged: 6.0.1.7541.

I really want to get the system to use 6.0.1.7580 in the vague hope that my microphone, which has utterly failed to be heard by anything as of a week ago, will start working properly again. Any tips on what I might be missing or doing wrong?
Well, based on the information provided and my own experience only, I would presume that you either didn't extract the .cab file at all, or didn't place the extracted files in the location that you're telling device manager to search. If you read the steps I used again, I chose to overwrite all the files in the C:\Program Files\Realtek\HDA folder, then tell it to search in that folder. Alternatively, and probably more ideally, you could just extract the .cab to any folder you desire, then set that as the folder to search through.

Looking under my Toolbars and Extensions, I see Microsoft Update Catalog, so I probably did install an addon. I don't remember doing that, but either way it's shown as published by Microsoft Corporation. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

In other news, 6.0.1.7586 is up since 8/18/2015, for both 32-bit and 64-bit.
