Info Request: Who makes the printer 'Maintenance' pages?

    Hi TenForums,

I'm James. :)I'm new here. I thought I might start my activity here with a thought provoking question: Who [the printer manufacture (e.g. Canon), or Microsoft] make the printer 'maintenance' page in 'printer properties' dialog box. I ask because I have a Canon MG5420, and the icons and graphics on the maintenance tab look awful (Windows 95/98-ish). I just posted some feedback about it, in the Windows 10 feedback app, but I don't know clearly who's responsible for this page.

Can anybody help?Info Request: Who makes the printer 'Maintenance' pages?-maintenance_screen.png

Those programs must come from printers manufacturer, normally they come with drivers.

"Maintenance" is not a standard Printer properties dialog. Driver manufacturers can add tabs to this dialog for their own purposes and Canon has done just that. Both dialogs in your screenshot are Cannon software.

That's interesting. So are all of the tabs at the top of the dialog box from Canon too? What, exactly, is from Canon, and what comes standard with Windows? Does Windows limit color-depth, icon file type, or font usage in these different tabs and dialog's, or does the printer manufacture choose to use lower the color depth in order to be backwards compatible with older OSes like Windows 98/2000?

MS does not write any specific drivers, manufacturers of parts do and send it to MS. Driver dialogs have to conform to some MS standards so they look pretty similar but reflect possibilities driver and windows "hooks" allow. Extra settings and maintenance programs are provided by manufacturer. Not sure about Canon but HP for instance provides other programs for download and use with their printers and are not automatically provided with drivers. With some of those programs you can even order supplies online.

It would appear that all of those tabs are custom tabs. It looks like a very old driver. Is that the driver that was installed by default in Windows? A driver manufacturer can choose which tabs to show, and provide their own custom tabs. It would seem that Cannon has chose to hide all the standard tabs, and use only custom tabs.

Here is the standard priner properties dialog. Notice the custom Maintenance tab (this is a more modern Cannon driver dialog), but all the rest are standard tabs.

@Mystere, I'm sorry. That is only the dialog box that opens when I click on "Printer Settings" in the gray "Canon My Printer" box to the right of the screenshot. When I navigate to it from right clicking on the printer image in "Devices and Printers", and selecting "Printer Properties" from context menu, it looks just like your screenshot. Either way, I think I might contact Canon with feedback about their hideous tabs and dialog windows, before Windows 10 officially launches.

Did you also notice the Deformed UAC (User Account Control) Icon in the grey "Canon My Printer" box to the right of the screenshot? Who controls that, Canon or Microsoft?

Is it really that hard to guess?

This is Nothing Short of Hilarious!

This is Nothing Short of Hilarious! I'm Floored!

    Dear Mr. Anderson:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I understand that you are experiencing difficulty using the 'My Printer' software program. I will be glad to assist you today.
You noted that the 'corners' are giving you a problem. However, I am unsure of what is meant by this word. So, in order to better assist you, please reply to this email and clarify what is being referred to.
Also, you mentioned the User Account Control to be distorted. Typically, this refers to the normal security setup on your Windows computer. Your computer may prompt you to verify any application before running it on your computer (for security purposes). For further clarification, are you attempting to install Canon or other software to your computer? If so, what appears to be distorted about the prompt?
I look forward to your reply.
    Thank you for choosing Canon.
    Sincerely,
    Mika
