    Add a device

    Hi,
    Add a device
How do I add a device (Scanner) to the Windows list of devices?
My scanner an Epson Perfection V500 Photo is working.
It is USB connected yet I can not find it in device manager.
It shows as not connected in:
    Settings> Devices > Printers & scanners
    Add a device-add-device.png
    Thanks

How about going to Epson and downloading the latest driver for your scanner:
Epson Perfection V500 Photo, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc.

The link I provided is for the 64 bit driver...so, if you have a 32 bit OS, then you need to change it to the 32 bit driver. Hope this works for you.

    add a devive

    Thanks play2mefish,
The driver is not my problem. The scanner works OK.
I want to get it added to the device list that windows 10 uses so I can investigate it's properties.
I can't seem to accomplish that.

OK, try going through the old control panel and see if you can see it from there. Click Windows Key and the letter X, and then click on Control Panel (you probably already knew that...I just threw it in in case you didn't). If you don't see it there, then I would go download the correct driver and do a reinstall. I suspect even though it is working, it is using windows drivers and not Epson's, and that is why you can't see it in devices. Give it a shot and let us know. Thanks.

    Thanks play2mefish
It did not show in the devices displayed by the old control panel. The driver link that you provide looks like it does every driver for the entire computer.
I don't want to do that. "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
I am willing to update the scanner driver.
If I look at Epson, the driver that they have is dated 7/22/2010 for my scanner perfection

I don't know the file name of my current driver so I can't check the date.
Do you know the file name for Epson scanner drivers?
    Thanks

In post 1 - your image shows the device as not connected. Is it connected and turned on?

    Add a device-add-device.png

Is the fact that it is reported as not connected the issue?

What do you get when you click on the device in the list: Epson Perfection V500

Device manager might show the scanner under imaging devices

    Add a device-devmanscan.png

Control Panel > Devices and Printers only show the printer, but since it's a combined device, I have to double click it to get to the scanner features.

I now have the Epson Perfection V500 showing in the
Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and printers

This is likely because I followed a suggestion to set services
    as follows:
Device Association Service Manual (Trigger Start)
Device Install Service Manual (Trigger Start)
    Device Management Enrollment Service Manual
Device Setup Manager Manual (Trigger Start)
DevQuery Background Discovery Broker Manual (Trigger Start)

I have lost track of the website that provided that information.

    Also:
Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners no longer shows the Epson Perfection V 500 as disconnected.

I started this investigation because I was told by Epson that there was a way to set the file save location
in the properties of the Epson Perfection V500. This would allow using the Scan to PDF button to save the scan at the same location during a series of scans. I will look into that.

    My error.
The scanner showed up in Devices and printers because it was turned on.
Before, it did not show up because it was off.
The device settings probably did not affect it either way.

    Sounds good Frank

I noticed that Devs & Ptrs show the device in Category: Scanner.

I checked my All-in-One and it had Category: Printer, Scanner

It might be a difference in Mfgr (Epson vs HP).

Did you install the Printer from disc or let Windows Update provide the drivers?

Discs have static data on them. It's better to let Windows Update (WU) provide the driver ... if WU doesn't install a driver or DevMgr flags it as inoperative, then download the install from the OEM.

    Your choice
    - leave it alone if everything is working,
    or
    - uninstall the printer, run WU manually to get the driver (visiting Epson only if needed).
