    - have you tried the Windows Scan App - it's in the store..
    - worked instantly with my Epson scanner..

The issue the OP is discussing is specific to the Brother MFC-J475DW printer/scanner after a recent Windows 10 update (not upgrade).

From the OP: My computer recently updated itself to Windows 10. (sounds like an initial 10 issue here ...)

Scan to file and having it show up on the computer in a folder or desktop means a perms issue to me if the software is finding the computer ok. I'd head in that direction, as you need perms to have the scanner send to the computer.

Check Windows Firewall settings for the Brother app/programs.

    Support & Downloads

    Win10 x64: MFC-J475DW

    Win10 x32: MFC-J475DW

Uninstall all components of the device (note that the scanner might show up separately from the printer)
    Discconnect the device
    Restart the machine

    Install the new software
    - connect the device via USB when prompted.
    Quick setup guide
